My son (a sophomore) took an economics class and an accounting class at UVA (Virginia) this summer. Anybody know if there's a time limit on how soon he needs to get these transferred over to Indiana? He'd kind of like to do it soon, but since the GPA average there was lower than his GPA average at Indiana, he's thinking of waiting until after he applies for (or is even accepted into) Kelley and the Mitte program.

He understands Mitte has a 3.5 GPA minimum--and if you count the UVA classes he falls below that, even though he's above it without the UVA classes. (Isn't it true that the UVA classes won't count in his Indiana GPA average?)

To answer your last question first, I found this on the website:

"6. Upon completion of the courses, YOU must request that an official* transcript be sent to the Office of
Admissions, 300 N. Jordan Avenue, Bloomington, Indiana, 47405. We will evaluate the transcript and will
update your permanent record with credit in those courses in which you earned a grade of "C" (2.0/4.0) or
better. For any course in which a grade of "C-" or below is received no credit will be given. Transfer
grades are not recorded in your IU G.P.A."

Here is the link to the form you use to get the courses approved before you take them. http://cts.admissions.indiana.edu/CTA_FRM.pdf

You have to dig fairly deep to find the info but if you go to the Office of Admissions Transfer Student page and select "transferring credit", it takes you to the Credit Transfer Service. You plug in the school where you took the class, and a drop down box appears that shows the depts and classes within those depts that are already approved for transfer. If the class doesn't appear there, you need to get it approved (ideally beforehand) using the form that I linked above.

I didn't see any deadlines listed but a call to Admissions would probably be a good idea.

Thanks, Illinoismom2006.

My son had already gone to the cts website and found that one of the classes was pre-approved, and he filled out the form you mentioned and got his second course pre-approved before attending classes at Virginia.

The question was how soon you needed to provide the transcript and do the transfer. From the data you provide, apparently, the rule is to do it right away. I'll ask my son to contact the Admissions Office as you suggest.
