I’m an ADHD-stricken high school sophomore who, despite seeking medical attention for my condition, still struggles immensely at time-management. I juggle a pretty rigorous schedule, ECs, and would ideally like to join a sport for the upcoming season. However, my ADHD is a HUGE obstacle. I’ve only recently begun taking medication, and the effects, although relatively trivial, have changed my life (in the sense that the feelings comparable to like reading with glasses for the first time–i’m on a low dose due to how it’s my first time taking the medicine.) Please help me with any tips you have!!! I always find myself cramming things into one or two nights a week and still finishing homework DURING CLASS. How do I become my most efficient self? I have the ambition, but my brain seems to be on another page. I feel like the only ways I can buckle down are 1. when I have an important assignment due or taking place within the next day or two 2. when i’m at the library, which I can’t frequent as much as I’d like due to distance, my inability to drive, and parental overprotectiveness (the extent of which really is ridiculous, but i do live in a big, transient city). ANYWAY PLEASE HELP. and I mean, this is sort of irrelevant, but how can I convince an overprotective parent to allow me to take public transport to the local library?
There are a couple of excellent books you should get that discuss executive function issues that are pretty common with ADHD. The one I like best is called Late, Lost & Unprepared. The second is called Smart but Scattered, Teens. Both books have practicle advice for the organizational issues you are discussing.
Maybe you could try to recreate the environment of the library at your home. Try to identify something about it that helps you focus whether it be sound, temperature, or smell (lavender, vanilla, and some others help me study). It might take a lot of trial and error before you pin it down. Good luck.
