How would you define "Time Management"? We have heard many times that it is the trick to succeed at MIT and keep your mental health. Please comment with your ideas and advices for our fellow members of the class of 2010.
Thank you.

Time management means being able to make yourself do a pset that isn't due tomorrow before watching reruns of Law and Order. :)

My advice is to make a basic schedule at the beginning of the week -- Sunday, 8.01 pset. Monday, 9.00 paper. Tuesday, 8.01 pset, 18.01 pset. And stick to it. Making schedules and forcing myself to follow them was the only way I survived taking heavy courseloads.

Some people just do well under pressure... but for most of us, time management means doing things ahead of time (and over time!) and not letting them pile up to finish all at once. Time management is the ability to view work as graduated instead of discrete. :P

did anyone opt to take 5.112 rather than 5.111, or 8.022 rather than 8.02? I don't kno what's the deal - since it's an intro class anyway, is it worth the extra work? (later in the run)

Most of the people I know who did 8.022 are course 8 majors, and most of the people I know who did 5.112 major in either 5, 7, 10, and/or doing premed.

oh ok thanks! it's timur rite? =P

That it is! As for myself, I plan on taking 8.022 and 3.091.

Intended course 8 major. :)

OOo: Also! The general consensus from asking around my friends has been that if you've taken and done well in AP Chemistry, you're definitely ready for 5.112.

yup im an intended 5 or 10 major. thanks for the info, and nice to meet ya - name's phil kim, from maryland!

Yeah, if you're doing 5 or 10, you're definitely going to want to take 5.112.

7 or 9 people will be okay with 5.111, but I think 5.112 is probably better prep for 5.12/5.13.

I took 5.112 and absolutely hated it. The fact that I passed was a miracle. It was the biggest mistake I made my first term. That said, most of the people who took it were just fine. If you're a prospective chem major, it might be a reasonable choice.

Also, in either 5.111 or 5.112 (I think - I know for sure with 5.112 since I did it), if you get a D or an F on the first test they offer you free one-on-one tutoring from an upperclassman.

time management is knowing how long it takes you to do things, and the rest is being motivated to get it done. It's not neccessarily doing things ahead of time; pass/no record is to help you explore what you can get away with ("Can I write a paper in 2 hours the morning it's due and get a good grade?" <-- the answer to this is yes, but the answer to "If I mention to the professor that I wrote the paper in the morning before class without doing the reading, will I keep my A?" is no. Not that I'm bitter or anything.)

I would say that time-management is everything that has been said, but more importantly it is making sure that you have time for a social life. You guys probably had tons of extra-curriculars and sports in high school and know how when you had a set schedule, you seemed to do work more efficiently. When I came to MIT, I started out doing crew (VERY briefly), but once I stopped that, I had so much time to do stuff. So I would make sure that if I wanted to get some work done, I would do it early on in the day and then I would have plenty of time to go out or at least hang out every night. For any of you who think that you have to manage your time just to be able to get the work done, this is not the case. If you don't plan at all, it may take the whole time, but with a little planning ahead, I was definitely able to go out and party most nights of the week.
