I'm a freshman at UW right now. I had a thought today, and I was wondering what people thinl. Next quarter there are two sections of Chem 152, one at 9:30 and one at 3:30. I was wonder if the later class will be easier in terms of the curve. My reasoning was that the super motivated kids will take the earlier class, while the people who want to sleep in and be lazy will take the later class. Couldn't this mean that it might be easier to get a higher grade in the later section?

I can assure you this is utter bull****. Did you fail your Circadian Clocks class?

This is mainly regulated by chronotype (Mean Sleep Factor), not your work ethic. You know, something controlled by genetics and your hormones.

Do you know why younger people (above the age of puberty) stay up late and wake up late? Would you think it’s a) younger people tend to be lazier b) the hormones of young people influence the timing of melatonin secretion?

Also your chronotype influences your attentiveness and learning efficiency w/regard with time of day, so you should be thinking about what time of day works best for YOU and stop projecting judgments on others.

That, or you could just study.

Not to mention your theory makes several assumptions about students in later classes that you’re hoping to be true.

What would you say? 10-year-olds are more hardworking than 20-year-olds? Female teenagers are more hardworking than male teenagers, but grandfathers work harder than grandmothers?

Or the supermotivated kids could take the late class figuring they could get several more hours of studying in…

the point being that there is no reason to make any crazy assumptions/aspersions about the people in either class time.

How would you know who took which section and why? What does the rest of their schedule look like? When are their other classes offered.

The only relevant questions are, what does your schedule look like? And, if your schedule permits you to enroll in either section, which time of the day do YOU prefer?

Eh. The 8 am class is probably full of people who couldn’t get into the later class, either because it was full or because it didn’t fit with their schedule, neither of which show any impact on intelligence.

Or the lazy kids would take the 3:30 class because they don’t want to be going to class at 9 ****ing PM. No idea how long the class is but I guarantee you a lot of students would rather not be in class till 10:30 or 11PM.

Here’s a better idea: work hard regardless and you’ll be fine.

That’s usually the case for me. It’s like a rat race trying to get classes that I end up taking whatever I can get.
