Time To Consider Regular Decision

After being deferred ED I’ve put together a list of schools to apply to RD. Let me know what you think or any comments you may have. I do realize some of these schools vary quite a bit yet there are things about all of them I do truly like. Of course Brown remains my first choice.

Brown
Yale
Bowdoin
University of Maine (Orono)
University of Vermont
Macalester
NYU
University of Chicago

I think you have a very balanced list. you took time and effort into saping it, unlike some people who apply to every ivy. Brown, Yale U Chicago obvoiusly amazing in their own rights. I know nothing about Mac, Bowdoin (i do think it is rather selective though). NYU is good, very big though if thats what you are going for, and vermont i got into, not really that selective but a pretty good school

thank you. I know some (alright most) of these schools are very selective but I’m hoping since I was at least deferred at Brown I will have a chance. Bowdoin is a very selective but it’s an amazing school (and in my home state of Maine). I almost didn’t apply to NYU actually because it is huge but I ended up applying because I LOVE New York City and want to go to a school with a liberal sway.

haha, they are selective, but you would never know if youll get in if you dont take the chance. thats what i did, and it worked. i hope the same happens for you, but just a little later. i was almost certain i was going to get deffered so i worked on all my applications and they are finished, but thankfully i dont have to use them. Good Luck! hopefully we will walk through the gates together in August.

I know of many kids who have been deferred from Brown. Now the chore is coming up with an alternative “list”. I know their GS has seriously refused to approve lists that do not show at least one very “likely” school on it. That is, “this school will definitely accept me and I won’t mind going there.” It’s a school that’s significantly easier acceptance rate than Brown’s. The resaon I mention this is because there’s not a single school on your list that’s not “selective”, or “more selective”. See, here’s the deal. You’ve got to put together a list of schools that are not more reaches. You more need safeties, or “likely” schools or “no problem” schools.

Here’s the acceptance rate for those on your list: Brown
Yale
Brown
Bowdoin
University of Chicago
NYU
Macalester
University of Vermont
University of Maine (Orono)

I would check out Wesleyan and Vassar.

Bowdoin is a great school but I had an interview today with an alumni and it doesn’t sound too great if you’re from an urban area. It’s a very small, quaint town the community is mostly made up of those retired.

I think I didn’t get accepted into Brown ED, my next choice would have been Vassar. It’s close to NYC and my college counselor told me about completely amazing experiences she had there like working with Rembrandt paintings and helping unionize a sweatshop in Chinatown NYC.

Macalester seems like a great choice for a slightly less selective school. I was planning on applying there myself had I not been accepted EA to Chicago.

A warning on Chicago’s selectivity though. The acceptance rate has been dropping for years, and with the huge number of EA applicants accepted the RD acceptance could plummet. It may very well surpass Bowdoin in selectivity.

Regardless, good luck! I’m also applying to Brown RD. Here’s wishing you all the best.

limabeans: I don’t think University of Vermont or University of Maine are good “likely” schools for someone who got deferred (not rejected) from Brown? I’d be surprised if the OP didn’t get in.

OP: If you are looking for a few more options, I second Wes, Vassar and Mac, and would add Oberlin as another LAC that has a lot in common with Brown. Goucher could be a great safety (and would probably give you money, if that’s a consideration); it is another LAC with a liberal/quirky bent, and it is in an urban-ish area.
