Time to get that second job, I guess

DD headed to Pitt in the Fall. All signs (merit money/ other scholarships) pointing to 14K/yr shortfall if the net price calc at Pitt is correct. I know the local Wally World is hiring!

I hear you. In my experience Pitt is notoriously cheap with the aid. And, don’t bank on things getting better over the four years. Some may tell you that some scholarships are available sophomore, junior or senior year. Don’t believe them. If there are they are few and far between and very very very competitive.

Whatever you agree to going is is the best you’ll get. In fact, plan on tuition increases every year!

I’ll offer an alternative view. My oldest attends U of Delaware OOS and my cost WITH scholarships is well over $14K. Pitt surprised me with a generous FA grant for my son that I wasn’t expecting. For me, Pitt is a bargain.

Fauster - I’m curious…can you share more about your situation? e.g. EFC, In or out of state, number of kids in college, and any other factor(s) you think led to your son getting a grant from Pitt. What did the Pitt aid package look like in subsequent years?

BTW…IMHO $14K of UDelaware is a super super bargain…what did you cost at Pitt end up for your S?

For UD, I said well over $14K, as in the high $20K’s…

We’re in-state for Pitt. Two kids in college, which is the factor that got him the FA grant IMHO. When my daughter graduates in 2016, I expect we’ll lose the grant and be paying full rate. But again, the full rate will be much more affordable than the OOS rate at UD with scholarships.

We found out about the grant during our accepted student visit. I walked over to the OAFA during one of the morning sessions and they gave me the number right then and there.

I too stopped by the financial aid office during our admitted students visit. They told us we would have our financial aid package certainly by the end of the month. I guess I was wrong when I assumed March…now I am hoping they at least meant April.

Last week financial aid office told me the aid/tuition cost mail will be out by end of April 1st. They will be an increase in tuition fee (3 to 4%), committee will decide the increase % based on the state grant which they know by end of June or July. Last couple years state has cut the funding for eduction, it’s not surprise if this trend continues. PA state college tuition fees is high (for state residences), when we compare with NC, GA, FL etc…

Please add 3 to 4% to the tuition cost once you get the aid package.

Yes it is high, even the college in commuting distance from us costs $14 just for tuition alone.

Tuition cost also depends on the specific school, engineering has a different cost than A&S, etc.
