I want to go to the best college possible (obviously) and once thought that would be an Ivy league. Recently, I have really been liking harvard. However, today i think reality set in after reading some stats and posts on this website.

Should I focus more on less selective schools?
SAT
CR: 790
Math: 640
Writing: 700

GPA: 4.46

In APs (3/yr 11th and 12th)... but my ECs are somewhat lacking.

I would really appreciate feedback. thanks.

Nahh, those are still in reach. Obviously, still apply to some match or slight reach schools. Don’t just apply to super-reaches like Harvard or Yale.

What is your ethnicity? What are your passions? Class Rank? Good essay writer?
Your chances for Harvard are slight to non-existent…
unless you are nationally/internationally ranked for something.

and Neal, I see you are going to CMC. Pretty awesome school =] Some really cool teachers. Just lots of construction recently =[

brave - Hold onto your dreams … you can’t achieve them otherwise! Do apply where ever you’d like to go. Just make sure you have a really appealing Plan B in case you’re not among the select few chosen (which is certainly no disgrace, as Ivys are a reach for everyone!). Good luck!

hey there! i’m portuguese and interested in attending harvard law school.
I’m moving to the US in 2 years to live there. My college GPA here is 3.9 out of 4.0
I think i’m smart enough to get over 170 in the LSAT. I speak portuguese, perfect english, italian, a little spanish and a little russian, and i’m going to start taking arabic lessons. I play piano, guitar and drums. i sing too. My parents don’t make that much money compared to a US income. Do you think i have a chance of getting into HLS?
Please be honest. i need to know what i’m aiming for.
Thankx!

lusoUSA – I would suggest starting your own thread, this is an undergrad board.

To the OP – don’t give up, especially based off the people on this website. A 790 in CR is amazing, and bringing up that math score to a 700 is perfectly achievable. Even if you can’t, I doubt it will matter much. Just pour your heart and soul into your essays, and you’ll just have to see what happens. But I do agree with NewHope, have a Plan B (or several)

Anyone with a 790CR should be able to do much better than 700 on writing. Focus on bringing up that and math and you should be in decent shape. Maybe not for Harvard without exceptional ECs, but for other top colleges.

What does your GPA mean? Are you probably one of the top kids in your class? How do your stats compare to students from your high schol who have been admitted to Ivies in the past? If you pull math closer to 700 and get writing around 750 you’ll be fine SAT wise for most non HYPSM colleges.

EVERYONE should focus on less selective schools. With so many very qualified applicants, only the adcoms know exactly what they’re looking for while building a class any particular year. There’s no problem applying to H (or any other selective school), but have a balanced and realistic list of admissions and financial matches and safeties as well.

As far as your gpa, give it UW, as all schools weight differently. And your gpa & APs can only be interpreted along with your coursework, was it the most difficult that your school offers?

I think someone with fewer ECs but absolutely stellar academics might be able to get into Harvard, from what a few have told me. Eh, too bad I never applied to Harvard back in the day, in retrospect it could’ve been fun.

But you definitely need to be really hardcore about your studies to stand a chance if you’re going that road.

Certainly wouldn’t hurt to put all you have into applying to an Ivy like Harvard, but you should also look at “lower” universities as the Ivies aren’t always the best fit for undergrads.
Anyways, dream BIG!

To reiterate what another person has said: unless you have perfect academics, lack of ECs is going to hurt. And perfect academics alone rarely cuts it (but it works sometimes)

Sorry kiddo - you’re probably not going to get in. Not to sound bitter or anything, but I had the same GPA as you, a ton of ECs and leadership positions, and a much higher SAT, and was thoroughly snubbed by the Ivy League. But apply anyway - you never know who’s going to be reading your application! Good luck!
