Time to try random things?

I will hopefully be attending Michigan next year if I'm accepted, and I was wondering if any current students could tell me how much free time you generally have? What sorts of things are you involved in outside of schoolwork?

I'd like to try a lot of things that I never had the chance to try in high school (fencing, ballroom dancing, other random sports), and I was just wondering how feasible it would be to balance these things with homework, especially because I plan to double major.

Thanks!

I have so much free time it’s ■■■■■■■■. I dropped one of my classes so I guess my situation isn’t entirely representative of everyone else, but I did the late drop/add deadline so I was in the class for 3/4ths of the semester anyway and my situation was pretty similar to how it is now. Aside from the fact that I had 4 more hours of class and 4 less hours of nap time :D

But basically as it is now, i have 11 credits which translates to 10 hours of class a week (it’s great, I know). MWF I only have an hour of class so I come back afterwards and I sleep. Literally the amount of free time I have is absurd. I have season tickets to football/basketball/hockey, and I’ve been to every football/hockey game this season. I’m in two stand-up comedy clubs right now that meet weekly and bi-monthly, and I’ve been on an Intramural team for both sets of seasons so far. I do all my homework and I’m doing fairly well for how little effort I’m putting in. I’m asleep probably around 10-12 hours a day with all my naps, and I drink probably around 4 times a week (yeah I know - should probably cut back haha but my schedule is tougher next semester so I might as well take advantage of it). I also go to the gym 5-6 times a week for about an hour and 30 minutes, factoring in transportation and lifting time altogether.

And even after all of that, I have so much free time it’s absurd. My Thursday/Friday/Saturdays are spent screwing around basically. I legitimately can do whatever I want. I guess it’s kind of different for me though because I go to bed at 2 or 3 every night since my friends stay up late too. So I wake up at 7ish and then I come back from my classes before my roommates or friends even wake up and sleep in til 4 pm-ish. So while theyre in class still, I’m catching up on sleep and then our schedules start to mix better.

But no joke, the amount of free time I have is nuts. I absolutely positively love it.

Edit: realized that this may only be the case for freshmen year as my classes get a lot harder next year (and next semester even). But then again I won’t be napping next semester because I’ll have a better class schedule so we’ll see how it goes

I don’t have any free time at all, but part of that is because I take advantage of way too many opportunities. I have started two clubs in two semesters and have done volunteer work and internships at the same time and I do some extra stuff on the side with the disabilities office for fun. So, if your situation turns out to be anything like mine, you’ll have lots of time to try random things-- but if you do that you won’t have much if any sitting around time to chill. Realistically, with my academic load, it is only reasonable to do one EC at a time. I am just unreasonable. :P

You guys…Make me want to go to U of M, so bad…

My sister says that for the first year, you feel like you have extraordinary amounts of free time for the first few weeks. She also says that initial week or two of freedom are both exciting and anxiety-filled.

CAN’T WAIT!

Did you guys feel this way the first week of college? the freedom without parents yet still wanting to go home?

albatross, i’m in the exact same situation as you… i have SO MUCH free time even with 15 credit hours. i’m taking a pretty easy schedule though right now so it’ll get harder. i think i’m going to start working out and do some volunteering next semester

Dear God I’d better get in ;)

Although I’m planning on double majoring…

SMH @albatross

Plan to have a decent amount of work if you’re taking more than 15 credits. 18 credits can definitely be a bit overwhelming, especially if what you’re taking doesn’t interest you (prereqs).

I enjoy the free time I have. I probably could be doing more but, eh, I’ll do it later.

Just join IM teams, I’m on three right now… it’s awesome

I wouldn’t wait too long to do cool things. After all, I am just a lowly liberal arts major, and both my “final” and “midterm” periods lasted a full month each. I have 15 major deadlines for papers or exams in the next three weeks, not counting regular assignments-- I have 30 deadlines total between now and my last exam. I have as many as three papers due on one day. My midterm schedule looked similar and it stretched from October 11 to November 18th (the dates of my first and last midterm exam, plus like eight papers and four other exams in between). And since I am just a liberal arts major I can’t imagine how busy you’ll be when you’re in later years of school!

…ummm ok, so you have to do a lot of stuff in Liberal Arts? What’s your point?

quit making it sound like liberal arts is a lot of work compared to other subjects. anyone in any major can take their deadlines and exams and make it sound overwhelming.

Nobody is saying that liberal arts majors have it worse off than everyone else.

“…ummm ok, so you have to do a lot of stuff in Liberal Arts? What’s your point?”

Read the title of the thread. That was her experience. I didn’t realize this thread is only open to certain people.

Most of your posts don’t have a point. You probably shouldn’t be the one whining about that sort of stuff.

well ur first sentence made sense, then u just kinda rambled on

MLD are you a freshman? Also, did you join the IM teams with people you know?

I have a good amount of free time. I’m taking 18 credits and have for the past couple semesters. I’m involved in several clubs and a sorority. I tried a bunch of things freshman year and stuck with the ones I like the most. I can fit in club meetings or hanging out with friends for a couple of hours on weeknights. On weekends I have lots of time to relax and do non-school related things.

It really depends on the classes you’re taking. Even though I’m taking 18 credits, I’m not drowning in work. Several of my classes only have small assignments so it is easier to deal with the class load. It also depends on how well you manage your time. If you are prone to distraction you might feel like you have less time than others who are able to complete their homework efficiently. If you really want to try something, it should be pretty easy to make it work in your schedule.

@umich2 yes I am. I made a soccer team with my roommate by walking around our house (Baits I, Parker House) and seeing who wanted to play. Then there was the actual Parker House team in the residence leag. Finally a coed team with an intervarsity group my roommate is in, but I am not. For flag football I played for the men’s and coed team’s of that same intervarsity group, and also the flag football team for ANS (American Nuclear Society) a student group because I planned on taking nuclear engineering, but not anymore.
