Timeline for Transfer Students

Can anyone here write out some sort of basic timeline for what students looking to transfer should follow? I'm going to be a sophomore this September and I want to transfer out of my current college. I'm very unsure about what the process is for transferring out though. So I'm just wondering: when should I start filling out applications/ getting recomendations/ sending out SAT scores? I know each individual college has its own deadlines but it'd be great if I could just get like a general order in which things should be done.

BTW, I'm not sure if I'll apply in the Fall or in Spring, but the default is Fall I guess.

[Let me google that for you](LMGTFY - Let Me Google That For You)

1rst link.

Good luck.

Thanks dbroncos23, but I already looked it up on google and I kind of wanted to hear personal suggestions. I should have been more specific, sorry.

Well after looking at some links I’ll try to make a personal time table. (Note; this is just a general time line as I have yet to take part in the transfer process.)

Most transfer applications are made available during late Fall, early Winter. You can actually access some earlier but cannot submit them until later because your Fall grades will not be obtainable. Also the Universities are dealing with Undergrad applications so they don’t want to have to deal with transfer applications until the Undergrads are taken care of.

So if I were you I would take a look at the schools you’re applying to and see when their applications will be made available. The majority of the schools use the Common App so you’ll most likely have the ability to start early on these.

As far as Letters of Recommendations go, try asking your professor around middle of Fall semester. This way, it allows the teacher to get to you know a little bit better, while at the same time giving sufficient time for him/her to draft the letter. Figuring it will take 3-4 weeks (if that) for him/her to write it then you’ll have the letters in time with your fall grades. When asked to send transcripts you’ll have everything together so you can just send them all of them in one shot.

I found this concerning the SATs in the Yale transfer FAQ.

"January

Last month during which the SAT I may be taken. SAT tests taken after January will not reach our office in time for Committee consideration."

So once again, I’ll generalize and say this is true for most of the universities. If you have already taken them then just make sure to send the scores, allowing about 2 weeks for Collegeboard to send them and the University to actually receive them.

The most important thing is to keep in mind the application deadlines. Don’t let them creep on you and make sure you take your time on the personal statements. Also, make sure you do well on your Fall semester as those will be the last grades the Universities will be seeing before making a decision.

Like I said I haven’t gone through the process yet but from reading and posting on this site, this seems to be the general rule of thumb. I’m sure someone will come on here and give you a more personal time line. Anyways good luck.

Thanks! That was very helpful.
I hope you can come back to this thread with updates when you do start the transfer process. And good luck to you too! :)

I did transferred in the Fall.

I started out on my essay during the Winter Break, basically wrote my first draft and made a list of what documents I need.

In the last week of January I asked for recs. In Feb, I got my transcript and got the Common App documents done with and prepared the “packets”.

I worked on my essay every other week. Last week of Feb/first week of March, I finalized my essays, submitted my CA online and sent everything again. Once my Winter quarter grades came in, I sent them in too.

It might vary drastically for you 'cause I was on the quarter system, didn’t retake my SAT’s and applied to just 3 colleges.

Thanks prateek92. I was actually kind of freaking out because I’m about to start my sophomore year but I feel very unprepared for the transfer process. I thought I was too late but I guess I still have a couple of months to get everything done.

How does the transfer process work for freshmen? I will be on the quarter system, meaning I will only have grades for my first quarter to show when I apply to transfer.
