Timing of App Submission

Hey everyone,

I’m flipping out right now. I’ve applied to every single Ivy except Dartmouth, and a bunch of other schools, making my essay total like 13 plus. It’s taken me forever to complete everything, add that to my procrastination problem, and it’s now the end of November and I have not submitted my applications. They will be in by December 1st, but does this put me at a disadvantage? Does Brown care? What about the other Ivy’s? I have a friend who already submitted his apps and is being interviewed by University of Pennsylvania. I’ve heard that it’s sort of a first come, first serve type of deal, and that the later I submit it, the less I get looked at. Someone please grant me peace of mind.

if you apply on December 1st you will be a full month before the deadline…

If the appliaction deadline says January 1, then that is the deadline. There is no priority when it comes to submitting your application (maybe at Harvard, if memory serves me correctly–application due by Dec. 1 equals priority for interview or something fancy). Also, I would really suggest you not worry about the application status of those around you and instead focus on yourself–it’ll make things so much easier in the long run.

True story: I can name at least 5 people off the top of my head who submitted their Brown application on January 1–and they all live in my dorm! Heck, I submitted mine on the 31st, I believe. Please try to relax!

Thank you so much.

I can’t speak to the other schools, but at Brown the admissions officers will be reading the early decision applications in early December. So any regular decision applications received this early will just sit in a folder. At Brown, there is no advantage to applying before Jan. 1.
