Timing of scholarship notification?

My daughter just saw on the application tracker that she's been accepted to the College of Science & Engineering. I'm wondering when notification of any scholarships is made. We're OOS.

We’re wondering too. Son also got accepted to CSE. It sounds like last year some ppl had heard by this time for at least some scholarships. Hopefully we start hearing soon. We’re in state. It sounds like OOS may hear sooner than in state from previous discussions on here?

I had to call admin just now to get tracker #, and she said ‘some’ scholarship awards should come with acceptance packet in the mail. The scholarship page on their website says awards will be given through the end of March-uggg. The wait to see how/if it is affordable is tough. I just want to know if the npc was close and if this really is a viable option for us.

<a href=“University-Wide Academic Scholarships | Office of Admissions”>http://admissions.tc.umn.edu/costsaid/schol_campus.html</a> “Scholarship recipients are notified by the end of March of their senior year.”

@marylandfour I hadn’t seen that, thanks. Ugh. Waiting until the end of March is a drag.

Dang, S didn’t get anything w/ the acceptance package - it was just a letter and a cardboard thing for the mortar board grad cap. Well - “by end of March” doesn’t necessarily mean we have to wait that long. They told us not to expect to hear decisions until November, but several ppl heard earlier than that and they give a “by” date for decision if one applies by priority deadline, but many ppl hear before that. So hopefully March is just the outside scholarship notification deadline as in “at latest”. Hopefully some scholarships will start trickling in for ppl by mid November?

@MomMe32‌, same acceptance package here. Sigh. Hoping as you are that there’s something long before March.

Our experience was in 2011 so things may have changed … but DD’s scholarship letter arrived on March 24th … it seemed like forever and we had pretty much given up hope. The good news was that she got the “Maroon and Gold Leadership Award” - $12k per year!

It does seem like the OOS awards are handed out earlier, but that is just anecdotal from reading these boards.

S received the basic NMF scholarship offer in the mail today. It’s the regular $11K/yr + $1,700 one-time research money. Same as D got 2 years ago. S’s test scores not as high as D’s, so wasn’t sure if he would qualify.

Don’t know how they handle things these days as we haven’t called them (yet). They have upped the total amount of money available to award for merit since then. Another parent posted about it and I found news articles referring to the increase. Two years ago they funded 125 of the higher awards and the rest of NMFs got smaller Cyrus Northrop scholarships. The Cyrus Northrop did not stack with the regular award, I was told then, but given to different NMFs.

In the past, students often got initial offer of NMF money, OOS waiver, Gold National, etc. and then some got more from Pres. or Bentson or other money much later. Interested to hear if they are still doing things the same way. Anyone get extras in their initial package? We are only one state away (have reciprocity so no OOS waiver needed), so others mailed the same time might not come until Mon/Tues.

When the latest test scores come in in 2 weeks, if it is happy news I’ll call UMN and ask questions. Will post what I learn.

Celesteroberts - Thanks for heads up. I realized I didn’t look at mail for past 2 days and went out to check after your post. Found letter dated 10/28. S got $10k Gold, + $5k Presidential + $1700 1x research. S isn’t retaking any tests, but his scores were already pretty good. Would you guess this is probably it for scholarships if nothing else changes (ie no new test scores and GPA/rank stay same)?

@momme32, thanks. Good to know. If his test score goes up a bit we can beg for more money then. Grades, etc already high. I’m pretty excited about what he got already, even if it is semi-automatic. S likes UMN a lot and probably will attend. UW is too close to home. He wants to go away. There are all these other NMF offers, but he likes UMN the best, even though it is ordinary here, a common destination for kids at his HS. Going to visit soon and just found out they have a special NMF visit day on that day.

If you read award letter, there should also be an extra NMF scholarship that is the real one that goes through NMSC. It’s $1,000/yr, or could be up to $2,000/yr if you have financial need.

@celestroberts, that would be great if there is more. I had been hoping for total b/t $10k-$16k/yr + that research one time deal when he applied. But UMN seems most unpredictable for merit money (of the schools that give out NMF scholarships) and things keep changing at all of them, so I wasn’t sure what to expect. It was heartening that they planned to increase merit $ this year, though the announcement didn’t go over well around here acc to the news.

Do you know if Cyrus Northrop & Bentson/Niblick are ever added to Gold and/or Presidential or is it usually a combo of 2 of them + maybe the $1k-2k NM one and one-time research?

UMN is super usual here too since we’re local. S was sort of fearing it may feel like HS again, but I don’t think he realizes that the place is big enough that, for the most part, he won’t run into ppl frequently unless he wants to.

We’re going to that NM thing too (if it’s the “backstage pass” deal). I hope it is significantly different from the other general tour and honors event we went to already. I thought talking to the major advisor was the most helpful thing we did on a tour so far.

D got her acceptance letter from U of Minn then 2 weeks later received a merit scholarship letter. D got her OOS tuition reduced to instate tuition for her merit scholarship ($7,250 a year). This letter arrived on 11/4. We live in CA.

Everyone who’s received a scholarship: did your status change online to include the scholarship package and how long did it take to get the scholarship after acceptance? Is it normal to get scholarships this early? It says by March on their website

D received the same scholarship, same timing as @ladeedi’s D. We live in Illinois. It was snail mail; I don’t see any indication of it online.

AFAIK scholarship notification is by mail only. Nothing on tracker. Honors comes on tracker, but not scholarship. Is that everybody elses experience?

My D got her acceptance letter and scholarship notice but not yet receive her honors letter. Is it possible or should I call U of Minn?

Honors would be on tracker first before any letter. But not many honors decisions have been made yet, only for the really top stat students. If your kid has 35/4.0 and not in honors yet you might call to inquire, but otherwise it may be awhile. Possibly months more.

Thank you @celesteroberts
