tip for out of state students

Hi, I'm a parent of a UCF grad who attended from out-of-state and want to let you know about the Out of State Student Mentoring program, sponsored by the Office of First Year Experience. We weren't aware of this until just after she started her freshman year, but it turned out to be a great way to begin to feel connected to the UCF community, especially if you don't know anyone else yet! I believe you have the option to choose a living/learning community (stay in the same dorm and take classes together). My daughter did her own thing, lived in Lake Claire, then Towers, then off-campus, but she did participate and met some of her very best friends through OSSM (pronounced "awesome"). At the time, each group was assigned a graduate student as a mentor, and the kids went on trips (theme parks, nature, skiing, etc.) and also had bbq's, dinners, meetings with the graduate student. Before you know it you will meet kids from all over Florida, the country and the world! Here's a link in case anyone is interested: OSSM: Out of State Student Mentoring at UCF

Congrats to all who have been admitted...UCF is a great school!

How long did it take her to receive notification of a scholarship or waiver? I am out of state and freaking out because I can’t afford out of state tuition! I have a 3.9 GPA and 29 ACT so I’m hoping to get something.

Hi cheerheart, I don’t remember when her aid package arrived, but definitely get your FAFSA in asap (available in January). Don’t worry if you or your parents don’t have exact numbers yet for the financial info; put down your best estimate and revise later. I hope you get a great package! Also, are you taking a major that is not offered in your home state? If so, and if your state is in the SE consortium, you may get a waiver that way. Ask UCF financial aid about that, or search on their website. Good luck!

Thank you so much! I already did the FAFSA for this year but I think they are definitely waiting for January for next years. I did look at the SE thing and Florida only provides it for graduate students unfortunately. Hopefully I will get information soon about it, considering they started review Oct. 15!
