I am a current senior in the state of Iowa applying to U of I. I will also be applying to Indiana University, Southern Methodist University and the University of Minnesota for business. All of the other schools have superior business programs, but Iowa would be very cheap and close to home, and I would have a lot of AP credit going in. However, I would like the potential name recognition and job placement of the other schools. Would being a direct admit to Tippie and the Honors program help with that? Is the business program underrated? Please feel free to comment about and/or compare any of these schools. Thank you!

If you want name recognition, go to Indiana. What business major do you want to pursue? If it is accounting, then go to Iowa because Tippie has a phenomenal prgram. Other than Indiana, I don’t think the others are worth the oos tuition. Have you visited any of these schools yet? I’m out of state and I visited indiana, university of Minnesota, uw madison, and iowa. I personally liked iowa the best because of the feel of the school and the accounting prgram. I may be a little biased, but hey, I was sold on the school when I visited. You should go to the business preview day on October 13 or nov 16 or feb 22. Admission counselors talk, the dean of the business school talks, the career placement people, students and professors talk. They do a little break before you tour the building and that’s when you can ask any questions to the professors or guidance/admission counselors. Iowa provides everything you need from top notch facilitates and programs to caring professors. You have to have really bad luck or you just screwed around for 4 years if you can’t land a good job or get into graduate school.

I would like to pursue finance and maybe accounting or marketing. I know I’ll have room to double major, so I’ll explore that later. I have visited all of the schools, but I hope to make another round doing overnight visits and digging deeper than the first time. I have done the business preview day at Iowa and I agree that it was very impressive! What are your favorite parts of the business program there?

I liked knowing I was direct admission into the school (saves a ton of stress). Living in the bizhawks llc over in hillcrest was awesome. I was able to meet friends who were in my major and made it so much easier to do better in school because you can just go across the hall and ask someone a question about an assignment or ask them if they want to study together for an upcoming test. Plus you learn business dinning etiquette by having dinner up in the press box of Kinnick stadium. You need to go to a school where you feel comfortable and like the most. Also ignore the Princeton Review ranking for #1 party school. The survey is a joke and next year people will be talking about a new school that is ranked #1.

Hey an42713, I’m having the same problem! I’m a senior as well and am from Illinois. I applied to Indiana, U of I, UW-Madison, Ohio State, and U Iowa. I also got into the honors program and would be a direct admit, and want to double major in Accounting and Finance. I think the benefit for me to going to Iowa is that I would be in the Honors program, be a direct admit (and not having to worry about getting in to the business school the next year), and would get all my common core requirements out of the way from my AP’s.

I just went to the business preview day last weekend and talked to some current students, business advisers, and professors. My mom straight out asked one of the business advisers why it would be beneficial for me to go to Iowa, and she said that first of all, each of the direct admit business students take a class with 10-15 other direct admits with a business adviser their first semester. This is nice because you already get to know your specific business adviser and get to know some of the other direct admit’s who will be in your classes for the next four years. Also, by being a direct admit student, you get to know your business adviser right away freshman year who would be a great resource to write rec letters for internships and/or grad school rec letters. Plus, one of the professors said that one of the benefits to going to Iowa (and being a direct admit) is that you stand out and have a better chance at getting a great internship. This is because you are just one of many, many smart high-achieving people at those other schools, where as at Iowa, you would really stand out with your group of direct admits.

One other thing I’ve noticed in my Econ class when studying the top current business professionals is that the majority of them didn’t go to the top business schools for undergrad, they went to the top business schools for grad school. So I guess what you have to think about is where are you going to get the best grades, feel the most comfortable, and have the best opportunities?
