Tips for a 2400

Hi, I'm looking to score a 2400 on the SAT on the first try. I'm pretty sure I am capable of this if I study enough. I know I can get an 800 on math easily unless I make stupid mistakes (which, unfortunately, I do somewhat often). I usually do well on the Critical Reading and Writing portions as well, but for some reason I'm nervous about these. I have a very good vocabulary already but will start studying vocabulary words from now so that I can be assured of doing well (it won't take me a long time to learn new words). However, the part that I am MOST worried about is the essay. I will definitely buy a prep book (maybe take a prep class) to learn about the essay and how to write it, but do you guys have any tips on how to get a perfect score on the essay? Also, what portion of your SAT score is the essay?

Thanks.

BTW: Yes, I have already read the relevant threads on this board, I just wanted some more advice.

Learn thy grammar. If you ace the writing MC and get a 9 on the essay it’s still possible to get 800W. (speaking from experience)

CR is a different story…

Hi Bobtheboy,

I scored a 2350 on the SAT. I’ll make a long post soon about how I was able to improve my score.

I would do it now but I need to go to dinner :)

I will be releasing a thorough guide to the SAT and admissions within a couple weeks.

^I’d like to buy some shares in that…:)

Wow, I didn’t even know there was a curve for the real SAT. Awesome.

Yes, one can usually miss one or two and get 800 on CR as well. For Math, however, one must almost always get everything right in order to get 800.

I’ll gladly make a down payment on your guide as well, silverturtle. To echo what leaf said, know your grammar frontwards and backwards. Grammar is basically the entire writing section. Additionally, good grammar engenders a habit of using complex, intelligent sentence structures in your writing, something that will be invaluable on your essay. I had a fantastic English teacher this year; learned all my grammar with him. Ended up with an 800 on the writing (perfect MC and 11 essay). Grammar is everything. CR is simply a matter of understanding the questions that will be thrown at you and the typical answer patterns with each. We on CC can’t help you much with that; that’s your task, to go through practice tests and become familiar with the College Board’s style of testing. Knowledge is power. Good luck!

You’re insanely lucky. I had the same results for May. 790, no 800.
With the insanely easy difficulty level of recent writing sections, you’re going to need a 10 on the essay with -0 MC for an 800. It’s frustrating for me as I got a 10 first time round (with -3MC) but 9 second time (with -0MC for a 790). Would’ve gotten an 800 had they ported my essay score (kept it the same.)

Good luck with your 2400! I hope we both don’t do any careless errors in math! Seems we have the same problem.

How much is the essay worth again? I took CB’s practice test and got 800 on CR and math and 680 on writing because i skipped the essay portion.

^ It explains everything very well on the CB’s grading section.

Nevermind, I couldn’t have gotten a 680 that’s impossible without the essay. I must have gotten a 670 then.

Which makes a theoretical 2400 assuming I do well on the essay. I don’t think I missed any MC questions but I didn’t check.

CB’s automated reader just gave me a 12 on the essay when I retook the test. How reliable is this?

Also, I had to retake the whole test to do the essay, but I didn’t bother with redoing the MC because it’s exactly the same. I got a 220 on CR/350 on writing/220 on math. That’s a 790 without even answering the MC. Apparently, 1,170 2009 graduates got this score on the SAT. Lol.
