Tips for Balancing ECs and Academics

So, how do YOU GUYS balance your insanely rigorous courseloads and ECs, i.e. sports? How many hours of sleep do you get a night?
I'm curious because I plan on having a big courseload next year and I will be juggling that with sports after school.
I want to know what to expect and how to cope.
Thanks. :)
Every bit of advice helps.

I find that the less free time I have, the more productive I am with the time given. I take all honors/ap courses and am a 3 sport varsity athlete. I would say that aside from getting 5 hours of sleep a night, it isn't all that bad. Make sure that when you do get time to do school work, use it wisely. Having a rigerous academic and EC life has taught me to be efficient with my life.

Thank you. :)
I am willing to get only 5 hours of sleep if it means excellence.
The unfortunate part is that my parents will not let me get less than 9 hours, though I secretly plan on doing so. If they push me to bed early and I haven't completed my work, I will wait until they climb into bed to work with a flashlight. I am that desperate. I am that stubborn. And I'm that willing to sacrifice for this.
I have functioned fine with only 5 hours of sleep before, so my worry is not that but my parents.
I had to plead them to let me do a sport. This control really bugs me.

(caffeine always works wonders for me in the morning, just in case)

Maximum 5 hours of sleep each night. Always - ALWAYS - reserve time to hang out and relax.

theoneo-At first, was it tiresome and hard for you to get only so little sleep? Did you eventually get used to it?

The important thing to remeber is that you can't let your EC compromise your sucess in school, or even your health! Make sure you feel comfortable in school before committing yourself to hard core extracirriculars.

Psycho, how old are you? because you need to tell your parents that sacrificing some sleep might be necessary to accomplish stuff sometimes.

I am >15 but <18.
I know that, but apparently my mom is caught up in some weird belief that more sleep=better success. However, I believe it depends.
I'll eventually wean them into my beliefs.

Yeah and I nearly killed myself to get where I am today, with the ECs, extra courseload, and sports. Trust me, it took a lot pleading and extra nights spent staying up worrying about where my future's going.

Can't help but wonder how much further I'd be today if it weren't for all of those stupid obstacles. IN FACT, I'm so spiteful about it I plan on being a LAWYER.

I kinda naturally run on little sleep. If I get too much then I get really sleepy during the day. It's weird. But yes, it can be hard sometimes.

I'm the same way with the extra sleep thing. More sleep makes me sluggish and tired throughout the day.
I've gone a day w/out sleep a few times. That was during a dire situation, though. I was fine through the afternoon, until evening hit around 7.

Studies show that those who sleep between 6-7 hours live longer than those who sleep for 8+ hours. That is nice that your parents want you to rest, but aren't you a little old for them to be forcing you to bed. I understand if you weren't doing anything productive, but if you are doing school work, why would they not let you finish?

When I pull an all-nighter I get an insomnia high until about 1 or 2 in the afternoon when I just want to lay down and sleep for hours. If I get past that, though, I'm fine until the late evening, and then I just want to lay down and die. :)

In their opinion health>productivity.
In my opinion life is not worth living without excellence.
Productivity>health.
Take away 10 years of my life for excellence and I'd still do it.
They would say I'm pushing it too hard (I don't think it's too much) and probably make me drop sports or not do ECs.
Hm.

***, why would anyone in the world want to live with less than 9 hours of sleep a day?

Sleep is one of the best things that's ever been invented.

i get 5.5-6 hours during the school year...but its because im watching tv till 11 lol.

I never said I LIKED5 hours of sleep. On Saturdays I sleep for 12+ hours. I love sleep, it makes me feel better after a school week of 20-25 hours total.

I sleep for 10 hours each day, slack off and do my own things each year until deadlines come. Then I don't sleep at all :)
Choose ECs that you like so that you can procrastinate with them.
You shouldn't be too concentrated, relax -- just try to be enjoying life whatever you do :)

I don't know how well that would work in college, lol
