Tips for Chem 142

Anyone have tips on how to get a good grade in Chem 142? Also, any summer study tips that might help? Professor recommendations?

Also, kind of tangent, but would this be a very difficult schedule for an incoming freshman?

Math 125
Chem 142
Psych 202
Eng 111

And any general tips on a schedule for Autumn quarter that's not too overwhelming but not too easy?

Thanks!!

Can’t edit the post anymore, but do you guys think it’d be better to put off Psych 202 until Winter Quarter? I’m thinking having three classes might give me some more flexibility in terms of transitioning to college life and having time to explore clubs and whatnot.

I would push off Psych 202 because not only are you taking a strong, weed-out load for autumn quarter (Math 125, Chem 142), but with Psych 202 you would be pushing at 20 credits, which means you would have to pay EXTRA tuition. I don’t know many first years who take 20 credits during their first quarter. If this quarter is easy with 15 credits (standard load), then perhaps you can bump up to 18, which is the max amount of credits you can take without being charged extra, and see how things work out. Remember, it’s not just about the quantity of courses you’re taking, but the quality of them towards your major and learning, and your effectiveness in the courses for grading.

Okay, so my current schedule is Math 125, Chem 142, and Eng 111 (pushing Psych 202 to next quarter). Would that be manageable? I’m really scared that having Math 125 and Chem 142 together in a quarter will become super overwhelming. What can I do to make those classes a little easier, in terms of prep I can do before autumn quarter or general study tips? I’ve done AP Calc AB and AP Chemistry and did fairly well on those exams, if that helps (didn’t want to skip into Chem 152 though).

Math 125/Chem 142/Engl 111 is a reasonable load if you have a good foundation in math and chem, which you appear to have. And if you are motivated in these subjects. The material will be somewhat (but not much) more rigorous than the corresponding APs but the pace will be faster. There are reasonably long problem sets in both courses, plus labs and lab reports in chem 142. It is smart to not place out of chem 142 unless you are able to place out of the entire general chem sequence and will not do ochem; you should make sure your differentiation is solid if you will skip math 124 (review before fall quarter!). Engl 111 will be easier, and provide some balance.

What major(s) are you considering?
