Tips for Move-In day?

Move-In is coming right up and I know I'm not the only person on here who will be moving into a dorm at UM for the first time this fall... what are some good tips or things you wish you'd known when moving in? Timing, parking, getting to know your roommate, rearranging the furniture, all the basics. Also, any input on what the first few days living in a dorm for the first time are like would be really nice to hear!

Basically, what do you know now that you wish you'd known last year or whatever? Anything good to know or keep in mind?

If your room is small, moving furniture around before starting to bring stuff in. The doubles in Markley were hard to organize furniture in even without bringing in additional stuff. If you have a large room though in terms of square feet it shouldn’t be too much of an issue though.

Before move-in day, review &/or print/bookmark the directions for stacking and un-stacking the modular furniture UM has in its dorms: [Modular Furniture | University Housing](http://housing.umich.edu/reshalls/modular-furniture).

Also, have your student write down & keep handy his/her log-in credentials for the UM computer system so you don’t have to dig around for them or try to remember them when you get there.

Don’t bring your whole room. If you want to pick which bed/desk/side of the room you get, try to get there before your roommate (if you have one). Parking is going to be difficult so be prepared. Invite your roommate to go to dinner with you the first night so you have someone to eat with and they do, too.

My roommate and I are trying to get to the university at the same time, so we can help each other unload. Getting there at the same time also rules out the possibility of one person making room decisions without the input of the other.
