Tips for OOS engineering transfer student.

So I have been looking at my majors curriculum and it looks like I could realistically graduate in 2.5 years. 2 years if I decide I want out as soon as possible. Either way I am looking at a hefty tuition cost; ~$60k total debt after graduation just from paying out-of-state costs the whole time. Are there any tips or tricks to qualifying for in-state tuition? So far I understand that being married to a Texas Resident for a year is one way (Yes,I would actually consider this). The other one is working 20 hours a week, getting a drivers license, pay taxes, not be claimed as a dependent by parents, and prove that you would actually want to live in the state. Anything else I should know regarding scholarships/grants etc. would be appreciated.

You can buy real estate, but you have to live in it (you used to be able to buy some cheap land somewhere and qualify).

A dorm would not count? I feel like this is a no. What if my parents bought a shanty condo and rented it out to me and a few other people? Would that still qualify or would the property have to be in my name?

Nope, a dorm doesn’t count. I can’t imagine finding a cheap condo in Austin these days.

I would recommend that you do a search of the UT website - I know they list all of the requirements. You could also call and ask to talk to the residency people - they are VERY helpful.
