Tips for Orientation

Yeah, I figured it was best to just not fight trying to take the Film class. I didn't want to ruin the next day and a half at orientation by having my OC mad at me. I can always take film next quarter, it just wasn't worth it for me to be stubborn.

liyana, how was the french placement exam? was it short?

Another note:

Pick up the coupon book at the barbeque. Not only is there a 20% discount couon, but one free capuccino coupon at any of those coffee houses.

I signed up and went back like a couple times, so like most meals, I had a free drink. :)

"I signed up and went back like a couple times"

I totally should have done that...

103 orientation rocked because you guys survived the heat!

anyway, so, the OCs dictate our schedules?? don't we get some input on it?? why can't we take 4 classes? what if one of the classes is a fiat lux?

You can take 4 if it is a fiat lux. The OC does not dictate your schedule. I guess it also depends on your orientation counselor.

It does depend a bit on your OC, most are pretty cool about things and will help you out a lot. As an engineer however, most of my schedule was set in stone in order to fulfill prereqs. I'm taking 4 classes for 15 units because of intro to bioengineering. a LOT of GE's were filled, I was disappointed 'cause i had really wanted to take poly sci or something along those lines

lower division poli sci courses were filled by orientation 101.. i dont see how its possible for freshmen to enroll in them.

yes, we of the 103 completely rock... we know how to beat the heat ;)
my OC said he wouldn't sign us up for 4 classes (meaning actual classes, not the 1 unit FLs) and that if we really wanted to, we'd have to sign up for the fourth on our own time. still i'm carrying 16 units (3 classes plus 2 units of music) so that's plenty.
and even though some people were lucky with the computers in the labs, please do not count on that kind of luck. people were waiting for nearly an hour at 103 (although i'm sure the blackouts didn't help much...)
workshops are optional, but i'd advise going to a few at least. not all of them are worth it depending on what you know going in. but using the whole day for free time isn't what orientation is about (we've got the whole year to do that! hehe). shopping with your 20% discount is best done on the 2nd day, though, so making time for that is worth it.
if you're taking the french test and you weren't in french this year, i advise brushing up on grammar, esp verb tenses. i'd been out of it for a year, but was still placed in lvl 3. depends on whether you want to test out of language, or don't mind taking more french.
you'll all have a blast at orientation, it's a hectic chaotic 3 days, but left me so excited for the start of the year! see y'all in the fall!

due to a scheduling problem, i won't arrive at orientation till maybe 9 or 10 am. Who should i call to let them know? i don't want to be totally lost during orientation.

at what times did most people check in?

one more thing

what kind of clothes did you guys bring? shorts and t-shirts?

if you're 9 am sharp you'ree fine. if you're more like 10 am call the program. i remember roxanne took care of the late arrivals. it's not a big deal. bring shorts and t-shirts right now its literally 90-100 degrees in westwooed.

yah 103 had record-breaking heat.
bring tees and make sure they aren't black!!!!! sigh

well, just check weather.com for your info, it should be cooling down sooon - bring extra tee's so you don't smell like a Trojan :D

I was in Europe from June 18th till August 1st and I'm going on 107 and just read that to get your Bruin card you HAVE to send in the application and picture 5 weeks in advance. I didn't do it before i left and have yet to do it. My friend who already went told me he saw a line to get your bruin card there though. Is this true? Can you get your bruin card at orientation if you didn't send in the application beforehand?

yes, you can get it the first day nearby by sproul when you check in.

anyone recommend coming early? my dad really wants to go early..like im talking 30-1 hr early. i guess its cause he wants to walk around. and this way ill have a short wait for the bruin card picture taking thingy.
btw, is it really hectic at orientation in the beginning or is it organized?

when you say early, do you mean early arrival? i heard that the early arrival bunch really clicked at orientation because they got to play all these icebreaker games.

but if you mean coming to orientation early, you can if you want to grab which bed you want to sleep on. and you don't get to start early on the bruin card wait. the counselors don't hand out anything until a certain time, and by that time, everyone are at orientation already. so if you want to be early in the bruincard line, you will probably have to be the first one to like up to get your package, and hopefully the counselor passing it out is fast enough to give you things before the other couselors. my counselor was a bit slow and i was one of the last ones in line for the bruincard.
