I've got an interview coming up for Emory. It says:

"Think about what youd like to relay to the interviewer and to the admission committee. We dont ask our alumni to quiz you on facts or current events; instead, we encourage them to help us get to know you better. Be prepared to talk about yourself. We're eager to learn more about your interests, accomplishments, favorite activities, motivations, inspirations, and ambitions. Come prepared to ask our alumni about their Emory experiences, as well. Were happy to answer your questions but, most importantly, this is your opportunity to share information about yourself with an alumni admission volunteer."

But I'm really scared. Not much caught up with current events, have NO idea what to ask to the alumni (I'm interested in the school, just have no idea what to ask!!), and have NO IDEA how interviews usually go...I've never had one in my life.

Please, please post any tips/experiences, anything.

I don’t know about Emory specifically, but most alum interviews are very casual. Most ask you to describe yourself and why you want to attend. Most alums feel a need to talk about the great points of the college - they want to help market their college to strong applicants.

The most important thing is to read up on the college in advance and try to think of some intelligent questions. The worse thing is to say you want to attend a particular college for a reason that is not applicable (such as saying you want to study engineering at a college that doesn’t offer engineering.)

For most colleges, the alum interview carries little weight in the admissions process. As long as you are polite and don’t act arrogant, it probably will not hurt your chances.

Also, try to find out a little about the interviewer, such as their age. My son’s interviewer only attended the college as a grad student. I looked that up and told my son in advance, so he knew not to ask him questions like “what are the dorms like?”

Thanks so much charlieschm! I’m glad it won’t be too serious… I’m just worrying about the current events questioning, which I really hope won’t happen!! I will definitely try to know as much as I can about the college before I go. However, it is sad that I can’t look up my interviewer before I go…since I don’t know who it is. Thanks!!

Did you miss this? You will not be asked about current events; you will be asked about your own accomplishments. Be prepared to discuss your extracurriculars, future plans for a major/career, and reasons for wanting to attend Emory (besides prestige/size/etc).

No, I did not miss it. But I’ve heard some colleges say that, but there’s often alumnis who do ask anyway…
