Tips for transferring

I know that CC is flooded with this kind of thread, but I just want to start one on my own.

Anyway, I'm a freshman currently attending BU for BME major. Got an average SAT (compare to others in CC) and decent EC in high school. Obviously, I don't know my grades this semester yet, but let's say everything works out and i get a 3.7+ gpa in BU, what would be some others things that I can do this year to increase my chances to the colleges that I'm looking at. For right now, I don't have a definite list, but these school are some possible goals.

Brown University for applied mathematics(got waitlisted last year)
JHU or Duke for BME
U Penn (i'm not sure about majors, possibly business?)
UC San Diego for BME
Harvard or Stanford (i am aware with the fact that these are reach for everybody)

I'm looking to apply for around 4 schools, the intended majors are probably BME, business or mathematics. Will possibly retake SAT in the winter/spring hopefully do better than my score in high school.

Are there any other colleges that anyone would suggest? I'm open to any suggestions.

Thanks for all who replies!

What's BME?
It wouldn't hurt to fully spell out the name, you know ;P

Edit: Wait.. is it Biomedical Engineering?

That is not a sound assumption; BU has one of the worst grade deflation programs in the nation.

UW is worse.

You get a 3.5 when you get a 95% in a class. now THAT's some messed up system. That means the only way you get a 4.0 is if you got above 99% on the class.

Deflation or not, I know at least 3 people on my floor that has 3.8+ gpa, all sophmore engineers. As I said, I don't know the grades i'll get since this is my first semester. But all i'm asking is for tips on transferring. Let's just assume I did ok on my first semester (if that's fine with nspeds). Again, I do not know what i'll get for grades. Any advice is welcomed.

One of the best things you can do is get to know two professors well enough to get good college recommendations. At least one.

All of the schools you have listed are reaches for everybody as transfers. If you would be happy to stay at BU if these apps are not successful, your list is fine. If not, you need some matches and safeties. Check transfer acceptance rates and find some with 40-70% transfer acceptance rates for your safeties.

Thank you. I'd be more than happy to stay at BU if i get rejected from all my reach schools. So, that's not a problem.

Bump...will anyone offer any tips that can increase my chance? Thx

what do YOU think you should do to increase your chance?
