The only accomodations within walking distance that I am aware of are:

Michigan League - on campus
Campus Inn
Bell Tower Hotel

All of them are OK but not great and usually expensive. You pay for the location. There are several hotels near the Briarwood Mall. None of these are within walking distance but all can be reached by bus or cab. It may be worth the cab fare - a better question for someone who goes to Ann Arbor without a car.

Michigan League -see above
No dorm rooms are available.

The schedule for Winter 2013 is not available yet. When it is, you can view it at [LSA Course Guide](<a href=“U-M Weblogin - Stale Request”>U-M Weblogin - Stale Request)

If you find a class that you want to attend, it would be courteous to email the professor in advance of your interest to attend the class. I would not bother contacting admissions or the math deparatment. I have never experienced a professor denying the request. You could probably sit in the rear of large lecture without notifying them but most math classes at U-M are small.

There are marching band auditions at orientation. I don’t think they recruit like they do for sports teams. I woud think you would have to be pretty good to be in the marching band. Keep in mind that marching band is a major time commitment during the fall term. Also keep in mind that there are other band opportunities outside of marching band that have varying time commitments. Most offer some from of course credit. I would recommend contacting the band office with questions.

The spring break is from March 1 to March 10. I would not recommend travelling to U-M during this week because the campus will be empty and you won’t get a good sense of what it is like.

I would sign up for the information and tour if you are going. They fill up so I would sign up in advance. If your son is a senior and has already applied and is admitted early action, there are Campus Day tours for admitted students. These will take place in February.

Look into the sporting events that may be taking place while you are there. February is Basketball and Hockey season. I am not sure what basketball games are home then; for the most part, the hockey team is on the road during February.

Look into cultural events that may be taking place. There are often concerts, theater and film festivals on or near campus.

I would check out the M-Den,the Main Street area, Kerrytown and the local restaurants.

If your son has a friend who is a student, he may be able to stay with his friend and get a better sense of dorm life.

It’s usually cold in February. Make sure you dress warm and have waterproof shoes/boots.

Enjoy your trip. Go Blue!
