Tips on Deferral?

I was just deferred from Bennington College in Vermont. While this is still fresh in my mind, and slightly unbelievable, based on my test scores, GPA, and writing ability, I do firmly believe that Bennington is the school for me. I know a lot of responses will be something along the lines of "at least your weren't denied," but I find it hard to believe that I will just magically get accepted the second time my application is reviewed. Any tips on improving my chances? While SAT scores are not a huge part of Bennington's selectivity, I will be retaking the test in January, I could definitely do better on Math (640) if I brought a calculator, among other things, like being well rested. I also plan to write an essay that explains why Bennington is right for me, but as a white, middle-class female, there honestly isn't much for me to offer to thier school. Ideas? I do highly appreciate it.

I’m in almost the same boat as you, but I got deferred from Bucknell.
I’m also getting two more letters of recomendation from people at my church, along with writing a letter explaining my lack of GPA and a laundry list of ECs.

Certainly an additional recommendation from someone who really knows you and can add a new and flattering perspective can’t hurt, but this is the time to inform them of any additional honors and awards, of new accomplishments in your ECs, of an upward trend in your grades this past semester, and a firm statement that if you are accepted (and can afford it), they are your top choice. And make sure that “Why I want to go to X” statement reflects what you have to offer them, rather than the other way around.

Thank you. I guess I can hope to improve my grades and expand upon any small things I may be able to bring to the school. Good luck to all other ED deferrees, in hopefully getting to your school of choice next fall, and completing and mailing alternative applications before the deadlines.

I was deferred from Northeastern. It not anywhere near my first choice, but I’d still like to get in to have it as an option. I updated the common app since I applied there, so I might email their admissions office and ask if there is any way to communicate what I added to them.

OP it seems like your already taking the right steps do better chancing your deferrel. Maybe, depending on the school, can even get a interview ( I know GWU, and other top schools like students interested in interviews) and present yourself to them nuevo.
