I've applied for dozens library, ASUCLA, ORL jobs (multiple times for some) and I have never gotten a job in my 2 years at UCLA. A couple of times, I got really promising responses after interviews but never heard from the employer again, even when I tried following up. I just want to know what's wrong with me and what I need to do to get a job. I think I'm hard-working and very aware of how to be polite and give good customer service.

Is it because I don't qualify for work study? Or do I need special connections and have employed friends recommend me to their bosses? Should I pester the bosses until they hire me? Or is it because I can't stay in LA during the summer (and if that's the case, should I lie and say I can?)

I know that last year, I was taking 20 units each quarter, but I still had big gaps of free time in my schedule and was willing to work at insanely early or late shifts and on weekends. Help me! I need a job, dammit.

If you really want a JOB, apply to BruinCafe. They take anybody. Apply during 0 week as soon as you move in. They literally take anybody. People are always quitting.

You get paid $9.65 an hour and I believe if you work after 7PM you get paid $10.25 an hour for each hour after 7. You also get to take coffee, pastries, and sandwiches at the end of your shift. And if the managers aren’t around, you can make your own custom smoothie and drink it once you’re done with your shift ;)

^^ is that true lol? sounds too good to be true to me tho… btw, anyone knows the people at front desk on residential buildings? where can i apply for a job like that and how’s the pay?

I’m sure YRL is hiring this fall quarter…and they’ll hire anybody. not the best job in the world…but whatever its a job rightttt ha
but seriously if you apply on time you’ll get hired.

I worked at Bcafe for a year. I had NO experience whatsoever. I asked for an application during 0 week, literally the 2nd day I moved in. I turned it in to the manager, she said okay, she gave me my hours (I chose them), and I went to the office behind BCafe and got my uniform. There was no interview or anything.

You do, however, need to bring your social security card or passport for verification and you need to do a fingerprint scan as it’s a government job technically.

Hi notaznguy, how did you like working at Bcafe? I feel it would be really hard but what would you say you learned from it? I am really serious, people have always stressed to me the importance of a customer service job.

The policy last year (and probably this year) was you needed to work a minimum of 10 hours a week and 1 of the shifts has to be a night shift (i.e. working X hours between 9PM-2AM) Note*: Bcafe closes at 2AM. Each shift must be a minimum of 2 hours long. Some of my friends worked 2 hours a day, everyday, while I worked 5 hours a day for 2 nights. I preferred to work at night cause I got paid more. I got stuck with the Thursday night shift one quarter and it sucked cause that’s when it’s really busy and when the drunk frat guys an sorority girls come in.

I actually liked working at Bcafe and many of my coworkers did too. Depending on the people you work with, who are other students and sometimes career workers, it can be pretty fun. For instance, when I worked at the smoothies bar, my coworkers and I would always talk and debate about sports. The customers/students always laughed at us when we’d talk smack about each other. We’d also have competitions to who could make the best looking caramel smoothie, who could make the best whip cream, etc. Sometimes when we got really bored and nobody was around, we would get ice from the ice cream and fruit vender and make it into a snowball and try to chuck it into a basket like basketball. It’s really depends on the people you’re around honestly. If the others are okay with messing around, you’ll have a blast. If your coworkers are anal and just want to work diligently, tough luck.

It’s not always fun of course. Sometimes it’s hard work when there’s a LOT of people coming in during the rush hour and your boss is bitching at you saying you’re too slow. Or sometimes the customer are d****bags and complain about every little thing. One thing that was always annoying was when people literally ordered 30 seconds ago and would come up to me and ask “Is my order ready yet?”

For the most part, everybody is really nice and some of the managers can be pretty cool. It is good experience in terms of working in a place where you have to interact with people. You definitely CANNOT get angry at the customers or be rude to them no matter what or you can get fired. Even if they throw crap at you (which will probably never happen), you can’t do anything to them. It’s also a learning experience because you can either have a really fun or really boring or really anal time with coworkers and managers.

I can say I liked working at BruinCafe. There really wasn’t any stress or anything. If you mess up, just throw it away and make another one. No repercussions for mistakes, except the occasional slap on the wrist if you mess up a lot and you’ve been working there for a long time :p

Ok, thanks notaznguy! Is it only BCaf that’s super easy to get or do I have the same chance with Rendezvous or Cafe 1919?

And @antontapplying, you just go to the front desks and ask for an app. I advise applying for all buildings because they vary in difficulty of getting in. I got rejected from my home building Sproul 5 quarters in a row but I made it to round 3 of interviews for Rieber. I didn’t get the job in the end because I couldn’t stay for summer session. I can’t remember the pay but it was around 10/hr with possibility of raise.

Thanks notaznguy, that was a thorough response I always thought people who worked at Bcafe were awesome because honestly, I think as a customer I am a lot to put up with lol! It just seems like it would be difficult to be with people who seem to be in a rush and stuff, but seems like you liked it so that’s good. And coworkers seem to set the tone :P

Original topic: is it a lot more difficult to get a clerical job on campus if we don’t have work study?

I don’t believe they allow students to work at Rendezvous. Most of the young people that work there are not students, but career workers.

I don’t know about Cafe 1919. I don’t live in the dorms anymore and last year was the first year Cafe 1919 opened. During that time, Cafe 1919 staff was an extension of BruinCafe. In essence, if you worked for BCafe, you were sometimes called over to work at Cafe 1919. I don’t know how they’re doing it this year.

@bruingirl01: ya atleast 12 hours a week, a shift must be min. 2 hours per day (8am-6pm) and you don’t have to work on the weekend if you dont want to (closed on Saturday anyway)…if you want an easy, non stressful, and boring job then YRL is the place for youuu haha

hey guys, do the libraries have job postings or do we just call them and ask what positions are available because i checked on their individual sites and couldn’t find anything…thanks

Has anyone ever worked at the child care center? I don’t have work study but I really want to work there. Anyone know the chances of being hired there without work study?
