Tips on getting into a good musical theatre program?

I’m an incoming sophomore and I am involved in theatre at my school as well as a member of a musical theatre competition team, and I am going to Try to do community theatre productions this coming school year. My GPA is a 3.4 right now but I’m working hard at improving it for the rest of high school. I was supposed to start in a few honours classes for the incoming school year but I changed schools and didn’t meet the requirements at my new school, but I’ll this year to get into some sophomore year. What do most musical theatre programs look for?

Most theatre schools are looking at your audition, it’s 80% or more audition and then the grades. Most schools for musical theatre want you to have some dance knowledge, so if you haven’t been taking dance or can’t afford to then study youtube videos on basic ballet techniques like pirouttees, fouettees, grand battements. Most will have a dance portion to their audition. Also voice lessons are usually a good idea. After that you will need to choose monologues (every school has different requirements for this) Usually something like 2 one minute contrasting pieces one needs to be pre-1966 and they need to fit your type and be age appropriate (they don’t want to see you read for a 40 year old women’s part) Then most will require 2 song selections, usually 1 ballad and 1 uptempo. Either a 16 bar or 32 bar cut.

There are lots of good threads on here you can read to get an idea of what the audition process will be like. Definetly spend sometime reading the musical theatre threads, it will be a grueling process.

There is also a great book you can get that explains the process and has some great resources. It’s called “I got In” by Mary Anna Dennard

Thank you! This was very helpful!
