Hi everyone!
Just wondering about the difficulty of transferring from St. Johns University in Queens to NYU.
I am a freshman in my first semester of college and am somewhat displeased with the lack of rigor of St. Johns. SJU is essentially an extension of high school. A professor is even advising us to transfer due to the reputation of the school.
My dream job is to work as an analyst at a bank… What are some good schools in the city that can help me? Whats the difference between CUNY and SUNY schools? I am from West Coast if that adds any sort of insight.
Financial aid is not an issue, I am already paying 30k plus to come here.
Also, what are some other colleges in the city that are worthwhile… I know Baruch and Fordham are good schools? Have any of you successfully gone through a similar process? Any tips on what to do in order to transfer such as GPA or specific ECs?
If your looking to break into investment banking I’d heavily consider nyu , it ranks 2 in sending its kids to big firms such as Goldman Sachs , Jp Morgan etc just to name a few . Cuny stands for city universities and suny is for state universities and to my knowledge they aren’t as good as St. John’s . Baruch is from I’ve heard of is a semi target for Morgan Stanley and far superior to St. John’s . Fordam isn’t not a good a good choice because your going to be paying nyu money for Baruch education . I’m in the same process as you , stern is focuses heavy on the numbers and is harder to get into than Columbia and other Ivy Leagues , it’s acceptance rate is 3% and even lower for transfers . Best advice is finish at least three semesters before transferring and a gpa of 4.0 will do .
If you can, transfer to Baruch for Spring - WAY more respected than SJU and will be the same cost for you (15K tuition, plus housing, food, etc). Spend the next 3 semesters there, getting good grades. During your 3d semester at Baruch, apply to NY Stern. Take rigorous math courses each semester even if it’s not required (2 semesters of calc, 2 semesters of stats). If it doesn’t work your Baruch degree will be worth more than SJU’s and you’re more likely to get into Stern from Baruch than from SJU so it’s win-win. I hope the deadline’s not over - I don’t think it is but it’ll soon be so HURRY.
Thank you so much!! Would you be able to give me some advice on applying to Baruch? What requirements would i need? Should i apply now even though its my first semester in college? How difficult would you say it is to transfer to Baruch
Applying to Baruch is pretty simple and they only take transfers after having completed about 42 plus credits , their gpa requirements is about a 2.5 , so keep it above a 3 just to be on the safe side .
Are you saying that you expect to have a 4.0 GPA by the end of the fall semester? Frankly, I don’t see how you can be academically successful at Baruch given your high school GPA/SAT profile. If Baruch requires your high school records for less than 30 transfer credits, you won’t make the cut. What was the highest math course you did in high school and/or you are currently doing at SJU? I think you might have a marginal success at transferring to CUNY- Queens or Brooklyn College for Econ than Baruch.
You’re okay Sat-wise because there’s a great disparity in scores at Baruch however your gpa is going to be a huge problem. Try applying for spring but I agree that your hs record likely won’t make it possible for you to get into baruch despite the 3.7-4.0 at sju. Branch will likely want to see another semester of A grades before they consider you.
As for NYU it’s not within the realm of possibility.
I do think another cuny would serve you as well as sju, for a lower cost, though.
What state are you a resident of?
Thank you everyone for your honest replies and help!
I am a resident of California. What if I apply for Fall 2016? Or should I wait until next year to submit an application for Fall 2017.
You don’t have class till 1/14 at SJU: what about you take a “winter session” class at Baruch? Those are usually non selective (you apply as a non degree student) and while there’d be a 10 day overlap with SJU spring classes, you could cut down to 4 classes at SJU to have a lighter schedule so that it fits, as well as 2 baruch summer session classes: this way, with 3 good Baruch grades, you’d have a great case to transfer Spring 2016; or if your 1st semester grades are good and your winter session grades are good too, you’d have an opportunity to apply for Fall 2016.
Anyway the most important session if you wish to transfer would be the Winter session. Choose one class you know you’ll do well in, because it’ll show the Baruch admission people that you can do well there. It’ll be the last grade they see on your transcript, after your Fall semester grades. And of course those better be good, so get a tutor in every subject you don’t currently have an A in.
Does SJU charge per credit? If so, take only 4 classes (and check them out on RMP first).
You need to make sure you have a math class, an economics class, an English class, and a science class, plus a 1-credit PE class. If you need to/wish to add a class, add an easy art class (art history or music appreciation for non majors should transfer to Baruch for their “art” requirement). For calculus or precalculus and economics, take advantage of the fact it’s a private university with smaller classes, go to office hours to ask questions, book a tutor right away, because your goal is to get an A and that won’t happen on its own.

Your application will have to be ready for February 1st. Therefore, you’ll bank on your Fall grades + Winter session grade being sufficient. You have to push yourself for the end of this semester (what’s your current grade in each subjec you’re taking?)
But because you can’t be sure it’ll work, you have to be 100% into your Spring classes, so that you can apply for Spring 2017. Deadline is October 2016, so at that point you’ll have Fall session grades at SJU + winter session grades at Baruch + Spring session grades at SJU + potentially a grade or two from your local CA community college. All of these need to be as good as possible (3.4+) and you’re sure to start at Baruch.
Therefore, you have two shots at this: This Spring, and next Fall.
I have all As except a C right now in French… Im working to get that up but its really a pain in the ass. Thank you so much… I cant never thank you enough! This is exactly the help I need. Considering that I do everything you say, would I have a good chance at getting in? Even if my high school GPA is pretty tragic and SAT scores are sub-par?
For Fall 2016, I’m not sure. You’d have to really bring that C up and do well in Winter session. I’d say this way it’s 50/50/
But for Spring 2016 I’m 99% sure (again: as long as your grades don’t slip and you do well.)
BTW, for Winter session, there are classes offered in later afternoon/early evenings, as well as over the weekend: those may be best to offset the problems for the 6 days when you’ll have class at SJU and Baruch at the same time, at the end of January.
What if the winter session is near impossible since my halls are closed? What advice would you give? I cant rent a hotel room for January… Do you think that I could enroll in Spring classes? Also, would I have to apply or how do I do it since im not a CUNY student
When do SJU halls open? Contact housing today.
Winter session at Baruch is, 01/04-01/25. It means that on 01/02 for at least week, you need to find your own accomodations. Youth hostel? friend’s? Air BnB? Combination thereof?
If that’s not possible, then a Spring night class at Baruch would be the only solution, but
if you take a Spring class there you won’t have those winter session grades on your application for a Fall 2016 transfer and your application will rest solely on your 1st semester grades at SJU.
(you can take 4 classes at SJU without jeopardizing your full time status; can you take those classes at th Staten island campus? I saw that instead of $1,200 per credit, the staten island campus charged $917. Also, Baruch has weekend classes as well as night classes but you have to be careful with RateMyProfessor, because teaching quality varies greatly and you REALLY REALLY don’t want someone rated 1 and up to 2.5. So, 4 classes at SJU + 1 night/weekend class at Baruch, any class really, would work).
What classes are you currently taking?
1st year students at Baruch must take 2 semesters of English composition, 1 semester of calculus (1 semester of precalculus if necessary), 1 semester of statistics, 2 semesters of a foreign language, 1 semester of science, 1 semester of political science or American History, 2 semesters of Economics.
Make sure your classes match as closely as possible these requirements.
SJU halls open in mid-January…Right now i’m enrolled in 15 credits… 5 classes consisting of Econ, History, Math, French, and Business Law. Next semester my schedule consists of Econ II, Calc, Eng, Computer Information Systems, and 2 eye-rolling SJU classes: Discover NY and Intro to business. My classes dont seem to add up to 1st year Baruch students… What do you suggest… should I change my schedule… drop those SJU core classes to make room for a spring class at Baruch? Does it matter which class? Also, they may be a dumb question but can I be a full time student AND take a class at another college… would that create some kind of issue with my current college?
