Tips to improve transfer odds?

So I am currently a freshman at a top 100 lac located in Michigan, with the desire to apply to the University of Michigan Ann Arbor for winter term. Recently I was declined from Michigan with:

3.44 first semester college g.p.a

3.6 high school g.p.a

28 ACT

A range of extra curricular activities

My question thus is besides improving g.p.a what are some ideas for activities that I could do this summer to bolster my transfer odds? Also, what are some of the better summer school programs offered that would improve a transfer application?

Thanks again for your help!

I am not personally very knowledgeable about the school you are applying for, but would suggest what I usually do. (Besides improving GPA of course. :))

1) Take more difficult / varied classes
2) Get involved in EC’s that involve volunteer work for good causes
3) Get more involved in a hobby/talent you have. (Like if chess, joining the USCF or if a sport, maybe a local amateur team.)
4) Research the school / students and forums a bit, see what kind of school it is. You can ask them what they think, ask for suggestions, etc.
5) Call an Admissions Officer there, mention your interest / being declined and ask how you can improve your chances for your next application.

Hope that helps :)

Summer internship or REU?

Try a summer internship, and instead of just being ‘involved’ with these extracurriculars, try to get into leadership positions in them. Looks better.
