What tips and tricks do you have for life at Rutgers? Do you have any advice? Do you recommend reading or going to any websites? What helped you out? What didn't help as much? Please post and help us incoming and future students.

Well, I certainly found How to Become a Straight A Student by Cal Newport very helpful with organizing my study time and such. It still takes a lot of discipline, but if you think about how awesome it’ll be to be done with your work and not have to worry about it, it really helps.

Also, I use the Nextbus text message service quite a bit. It’s 41411; you text “Rubus (bus stop)” and it will text back with all the buses that will stop there and how many minutes away each one is, approximately, like the Nextbus signs at certain stops. It helps when you are in the middle of doing something but need to know when to pack up for the bus, or when a stop doesn’t have the Nextbus sign.

Always take the initiative. No one is babying you in college, but that’s also an awesome thing. Office hours are helpful depending on the professor, but try to find help with your friends and textbook, too. If you are having trouble with some weird Rutgers red tape, just keep calm and work through it.

But overall, don’t worry too much about everything! Having a balance between academic and social life is really important, just don’t forget about one or the other.

Incidentally, the guy who made the Rutgers bus texting service (it is not technically an official Rutgers development) is here on college confidential. His user name is “vaibhav2614”. If you had any questions pertaining to the texting service itself, I’m sure he’d be glad to answer them, though I can’t say how often he logs on since his last activity was June of 2009.
