Tips you need for the real world

I know we place a lot of emphasis on college, but college doesn't really prepare you for how to BE an adult once you graduate. Let's list some tips that can help CCers, young and old(er), cope once they graduate and get into the real world.

I'll start.

Double down on little things. Small bottles of aspirin, floss, batteries, extra sticks of deoderant, etc. Always keep some around.

Get in the habit of cleaning yourself and proper hygiene. Don't act like some of you don't go a few days (or maybe even a week or two) without bathing, brushing your teeth, that kind of thing. It seriously will help your morale and esteem. I've realized that when you don't take the time to slow down, life will start feeling like a runaway freight train. Take a minute to give yourself the once over. Take a long shower. This probably applies more to guys than girls.

Learn how to tip. 10% of the double, then double it. Easy. Well, once you get it in your head.

Learn how to balance your checkbook. It's not hard, you just have to take the time to sit down and learn how. How to Regularly Balance Your Checkbook | eHow.com

And while you're at it, learn how read your credit card statements:
Understanding Your Credit Card Statement

Aaaand while we're on the subject, have money on you. Don't be the person who always has to go to the ATM. For your own safety and convenience, and your company's convenience if you're out with friends or something.

Learn to drive. I know that's an ambiguous tip, but seriously? White knuckling it from point A to point B then back to point A isn't socially acceptable. Don't that A-hole driver who does 60mph on surface streets, cuts people off in traffic, and drives like a maniac.

Also, get out of the habit of driving while on your cell phone, or don't start the habit. Should you get pulled over for anything, cops aren't very lenient for people who drive while on their cell phones. I found this out the hard way.

Take omega-3 pills. They have a host of nutritional properties. If you never take another supplement, take these.

Eating candy all the time is simply unacceptable.

On page 11 he quotes a study by William Galston, a former advisor to President Clinton. Galston shows that you only have to do three simple things to avoid being poor: finish high school, marry before having a child, and wait until age 20 to have a child. Only 8% of people who do these three things are poor, compared to 79% for those who do not.
