Tired of URM Chances?

Dbate: If your academic strengths point toward engineering you will be more likely to be admitted to med school with an engineering major. Play to your strengths in your first year of college and take the classes you are more likely to succeed in, not necessarily the regular pre-med curriculum.

I've heard that those who benefit most from AA are white, middle class women. Anyone know any facts that would support/reject this?

[/quote]

Yes that's true, except it's mainly whites in general. If you look at statistics it's clear that women have benefited the most in terms of increased representation. The concept of the ORM hurts minorities since Asians are minorities. However, the concept of the URM helps Blacks and Latinos while having a neutral effect on whites. Also, it can be argued that the whole college admissions process benefits whites since a majority of legacies are white, a majority of athletes are white, etc. so giving consideration to these things benefits whites the most.

Dbate:
I guess I did not understand your post but now that I understand what you meant, I sort of agree with you. I thinks it's disrespectful when people make comments like, "You'll get in because you're <insert urm="" group="">." People think that race carries a lot of weight in the admissions process when it really doesn't.</insert>

"a majority of the athletes are white"...

have you ever watched the nba?

I was going to comment about that...No idea what kind of athletes he's talking about.

mathletes?

I wonder if the poster might have meant college athletes... since this is a college forum and all...

Yes, I was talking about college athletes. And besides, there are more sports than just basketball. You have to count football, swimming, track and field, soccer, tennis, golf, etc...

i think the problem with admissions is they dont look at what's truly important. while i don't think colleges should factor in race in admissions, i think they need to look at socioeconomic status, which is the true deciding factor in opportunities afforded to an applicant. race alone shouldn't be considered. a rich african-american shouldn't have a leg up over a poor asian-american

dude the mathletes are asian

the OP is quite ignorant. URM's are just participants in the game. They didnt create it. Dont be mad just because they (you) have a leg up. If you want to go after someone, go after admissions boards. URMs believe they have better chances because they do!

Its not like elite schools would be void of blacks and hispanics but there would be certainly less. There are plenty of URM's who would have gotten into top schools without the help of AA. If thats you then good for you! Even if you got in due to AA, good for you as well (You're getting a good education and you have to be at least somewhat smart. Most black short bus kids wouldnt get to go to harvard just because they're black)

I can understand the OP's anger if he believes he could have gotten to his school without AA. This maybe true, but if so who cares; quit whining! you got the help whether you wanted it or not. and guess what you got in the freaking school anyway! there are plenty of worse things that could happen. If you believe this is so "awful" go to berkely or UM so you can tell all your friends that you didnt need AA to help you. They will think so much more of you. sarcasm

The fact is that URM's DO have significantly greater chances of getting into top schools than whites and asians with similar stats (except at UC and UM). Thats just the way it is. Get over it.

goblue have you ever watched the NHL or MLB?

I insist:

The schools were going to accept a more or less set number of URMs anyway, therefore when one Hispanic gets in another Hispanic didn't, when one Black does another one didn't, and so on and so forth. They are not taking any body else's place.

And within each group they try to accept the most qualified.

you guys should look into Shelby Steele's literary works

Here's an example. This kid has mediocre academics. His dad is a Princeton alumnus and he certainly has not been disadvantaged. However, he expects his
race to secure him a place in Princeton's freshmen class, although frankly
I don't think he deserves a place.

i think his actual words negate that statement... however, i do agree that he probably doesn't deserve to get in.
