Hello! I recently got accepted into the Playwrights Horizons Studio at Tisch, but I'm a little disappointed because it isn't strictly acting, which is what I was really looking forward to in a studio. Is there anyway that I will able to transfer to a different studio once I get to NYU in the fall? And if so, how long will it take for me to transfer?

Rickeyy, Playwrights is a great studio and you will have wonderful actor training there. To my knowledge, you cannot just transfer as a freshman between studios. You usually have to wait until after your primary studio training (freshman and sophomore years) is over to transfer to another studio for advanced training. Sorry. If I were you, I would make an effort to learn more about Playwrights’; the NYU Tisch auditors are pretty darned skilled at placing students in the “right” studio for them and get it right 99.9% of the time.

You should definitely only pick Tisch if you really see yourself at Playwrights for two years, because technically you cannot transfer. Playwrights is also a really good studio and the people there really love it.
HOWEVER, I do have to say that while this is not the “official” policy, if you really hate playwrights after a week or two you can transfer out. It is really difficult though, I’ve heard that you have to go to tons of meetings with your adviser, meet with the Student Services director, etc. Basically you really have to hassle them.
But I will say that it is possible and is done, but you should really go in with an open mind and positive attitude.

Two people from ETW transferred into Strasberg this year, along with someone from CAP I think. And one girl transferred out of Strasberg into Meisner, and one guy went to CAP after a year of Strasberg. And I know someone in ETW who is going to be in the New Studio in the fall as freshman, along with someone from CAP this year who is also going to be in the New Studio. And one girl in my writing class is going from Playwrights to Adler.
But you really must have a good reason to do so along with really special circumstances. It’s not common and it’s not encouraged, but if you really feel completely out of place then you should talk to your adviser about your options. But another thing to keep in mind is that you will feel out of place sometimes. The work is challenging, and can be really different from what people are used to doing in high school, and you really have to have an open mind for all kinds of drama training. But 99 percent of the people usually love their studio and feel like Tisch really made the right decision.

I am one of the two people mentioned above that transferred from ETW to Strasberg at the beginning of the year. It’s really discouraged. I had to meet with a whole bunch of people- the head of ETW, my advisor, the head freshman drama advisor etc… and take some time to think about it. I was asked if I wanted to take an academic semester or year off, ti which I gave a resounding “NO.” I was asked many questions about what I wanted to do with my theatre training, how I pictured my theatrical career and a million other questions. IT IS EXTREMELY DISCOURAGED. It took forever and they had to be absolutely sure that it was the right choice for me and the group as a whole. Just because you want to leave, is absolutely no guarantee that they’ll let you move.
Like Notmamarose and claydavisdbc said, you should only pick Tisch if you see yourself at Playwrights for all four years. I’m sure Playwright’s is a great place- I have a friend who loved it so much she decided to do all four years there- she’s graduating this May.

Thanks for the advice guys!! Yea I’ll just see how I like it once I get there. And I realy wish that I knew when their website will be done. Right now it’s “under construction” and I have no clue when I’ll be able to look at it. Does anyone have a guess as to when It’ll be back up?

if you go to the website and add /faculty you can get into most of the site. Considering the last time I checked two months ago they only listed Vicki and somebody else, Salty Brine’s done a ton of work. Check my posts on the tisch MT thread… trust me you’re fine. Playwrights is amazing. And if you want to do something else after two years you can. Or you can stay the third year and do MT, Acting, or COW/production. Give it a chance. Chances are you’ll love it and be telling someone else what I’m saying next year.

Rickeyy, As a Mom of a son who graduate from Playwrights, I can only tell you what a great experience he had. Playwrights opens you to every aspect of theater and whether you choose to picK one of these other paths( Acting, Musical theater, Directing, Writing, Tech theater) It will make you a better and more sympathetic actor. I know of many sucessful Playwright actors, and if you ask a playwright student who works the hardestat Tisch, they will tell you it’s the playwrights kids! Best of luck… cam
