Tisch Early Decisioners

Thought it might be cool to start a thread for all of us who are applying ED to NYU and are auditioning in the next few weeks. We could compare what our auditions are like and play the waiting game together until December!

Anyone auditioned yet? My audition is the 14th in the afternoon. Anyone else going that day?

I AM...sweet...are you a girl or boy?

do they give you the choice at e.d. for cap 21 only or another studio if they place you there?

They always give you that option, ED or not. They will ask you at the audition if you would accept another studio if rejected from CAP. And it is still binding, by the way.

Hey Chrisnoo! I'm a girl. I'll see you there!

I have two students going ED. Both for straight theatre. One auditions Nov. 15, the other Nov. 18.

PM or email me and I will give you their names and ionfo.

Good luck to all of you. I can't wait to hear.

xxx,Mary Anna

good luck to all you ed people this weekend...cya there!

Chris, were you there to audition today (Saturday)? I am not clear by your posts. My daughter who is a freshman at CAP, was on a crew assignment at Experimental Theater Wing at the matinee today which is located in the Tisch building at 721 Broadway. She said when she was leaving, she saw all these kids there for the ED audition and they started to talk to her and ask her questions being that she is a current student at CAP. She said it felt so funny to be on the "other side" because it was just 8 months ago that she was the one auditioning and dying to talk to current students in the programs. She could tell kids were eager to talk to anyone who was in the college program and that she realized they had no idea that they (the seniors in HS) were talking to someone who is likely younger than they are (she normally would be in 11th grade where we live but accelerated in school, and graduated early as well, and just turned 17). It felt funny on the one hand to be in this position but on the other, a great chance to give back to the next crop of kids as she knew only too well what it was like to be auditioning. I don't know if she talked to any of you kids or not. When she called to tell me, I was thinking of you guys and wondering if you ran into her and how coincidental that would have been. I didn't know she'd run into the audition and neither did she realize an audition was going on where she was until she came upon it.

I hope you had a great audition and the most you can really hope for is to have come away feeling you did your best. The rest is now out of your hands. Be sure to work on your other college applications and move on and if you get in ED, you'll be all done but if not, your plans will have been moving forward and many other opportunities await.

I'm auditioning Nov. 17, and I was wondering for anyone who knows... with a prerecorded accompaniment, should it only be the 32 bars I'm performing from each song, or the entire song? I'm singing the beginning of one piece and what's essentially the end of the other, and I'm a little confused and somewhat panicked. I tried to contact someone from admissions, but they weren't much help.

Thanks!

i suggest you put both pieces you are singing (32 bars each) on one tape and then on another tape( or better yet on two other seperate tapes, clearly marked of course!), both songs in their entirety in case they want to hear more. break a leg!

Or, better yet, if you have the capability - burn them onto a CD. Track 1 - cut #1, Track 2 - cut #2, Track 3 - full song #1, Track 4 - full song #2.

NOT something to worry and stress out over if you can't do it - but if your school has a media class, they most probably could do it for you in a flash, or TONS of technologially savvy kids have the means to transfer audio to their computer, then burn disc from there.

that is a great idea! I will take it one step further and say that it is prudent to have both cassette tapes and CD's, extra batteries and your own CD/tape player, all tucked away into a little (carry-on size) rolling suitcase. When D#1 started going out on equity auditions last year, everyone at the auditions were using this type of suitcase (as opposed to backpacks, big bags, etc.). The suitcase is compact but large enough to carry change of clothes, dance clothes, box of throat coat, audition book (binder of music), headshots/resumes, etc.,

This is a very helpful and useful idea to use a rolling bag! Could you explain the "throatcoat" you mention?

throatcoat (probably two words!) is an herbal tea that my D's voice teacher recommended years ago. you can purchase it at most any grocery store either in the tea section or the healthfood section. i believe there is something called "slippery Elm" in it, which i believe can also be taken in another form, but as i recall my D did not like that method because the heat from the tea (plus the honey she put in) soothed her throat better. My D makes a huge thermos full of throatcoat and schleps it along with a jar of honey to all her auditions, rehearsals, etc. she also carries a box of the teabags so she can plonk one in a cup of hot water no matter where she is. hope that helps!

Thanks so much! My son says cough drops and Dayquill help him, but I worry about the ingredients. This sounds heathier.

actually, my D's voice teacher has forbid her to take any kind of medication for colds, cough, sore throat, allergy, etc. because the ingredients are very drying to the vocal cords (also, dont use anything with menthol in it). the very best thing your son can do for the health of his cords is sleep in a nice steamy room, (my D uses a vaporizor and lots of blankets), avoid airconditioning at all costs, (even in the summer), sit in the bathroom with the water running hot and what my daughter has invented: the hot car. She sits in front of the theatre in a nice sunny spot in her car with the windows rolled up (the car is off of course) and works up a real sweat while she warms up with her vocals for about 10 minutes. I have heard the results--astonishing!

wow soozie...i think i met your daughter...what a small world...is she like 5'6 ish...curly brown hair...really nice...?

Maybe you did meet her, wouldn't that be funny? She is 5'3" though. Her hair IS brown. Lately she has been wearing it very wavy on the long side with side part and side swept bangs. On the "really nice" part, lol....she is very outgoing, verbal, and would be the type to talk enthusiastically and personably to kids who wanted to know more. I don't know how many or if you met any other CAP kids. She just happened to be on crew at ETW's matinee in the same building and came upon the group of kids there auditioning who started to ask her questions and it felt like such a twist to be the one answering after being in your position very recently, let alone is probably younger than you, lol. Having JUST gone through it meant it was fresh in her mind to know what you guys were wanting to know. Plus, she loves the program so much and has learned lots and has had some cool experiences so you were talking to a "happy camper".

If you want to PM or e mail me in case she mentioned her name or some other stuff she may have said, I could likely figure out if it had been her or not. I have no clue what she was wearing but if you said what you remember, I could likely have a clue if you met her. So, how did it all go?

I, nor she, knew she'd be running into you guys and if I had known, I could have made it so you met up. I found out after the fact (she did not even know the auditions were going on til she ran into them) and then told her, that I thought some CC kids were there yesterday.

Susan

i just realized how confusing all my posts were...im sorry everyone...i auditioned on november 12...not 14th...sorry, but yeah...hope that clears things up

chris

Chris, yeah that was my confusion earlier but anyway, from your PM, sounds like you did talk with my daughter. How funny is that considering it was not set up in advance and she was not there to audition by just came upon you guys by chance! Glad you got to talk.

Keeping positive thoughts for you all.
