Tisch Scholarship

Anybody else get this or know anything about it?

My D got a Tisch scholarship. I believe it is talent based. You are evaluated at the audition. I also believe need might play a factor.

The Tisch College of Citizenship and Public Service is a branch of Tufts that promotes the idea of Active Citizenship - that one can take their passions, interests, and intellectualism and use them to create meaningful positive change in the world. The Tisch college asked us to identity students, during the admissions process, who have financial need and that possess qualities of - or the potential to be - tremendous Active Citizens. The Tisch College provides financial grants to these students (based on need), and provides a program for students who have a further interest in Active Citizenship.

Being a Tisch scholar provides you with access to the resources and opportunities of the Tisch College. Perhaps more important than that, they receive mentoring on how to create and refine their ideas and on how to motivate people into action. This lets students take BIG ideas and make them relevant and reality. It's an opportunity that available to all students at Tufts, but the Tisch Scholars we find during the admissions process will have that guidance and access from the moment they step on campus.

To give you an idea of the sort of projects that become possible, here's a link: Scholar Projects. And that's just what happened this past year.

For those of you who were not named scholars, but think this is something you'd like to do, or a program with which you'd like to get involved, there's more to be learned here: Student Programs

P.S. There is no 'audition.'

raises hand I got it as well. It sounds like a really cool program and fits me perfectly so I really hope I am able to come to Tufts (though the rest of the financial aid package was dismal, so we'll see). Dan, how many other applicants were offered this?

My son is a recipient of the Tisch Scholarship - in addition to the grant, he is complementing his science courses with courses in Peace and Justice Studies.

Dan summed things up nicely (as usual!) I would only add that designation as a Tisch Scholar gains you automatic acceptance into the Tisch school as well as the introductory perspectives course as a freshman. My understanding is that the Tisch school accepts about 28% of its freshmen applicants, so this is is particularly great if you are interested in "active citizenship".

The grant itself is substantial, and is applied directly to student loans that the student would have received. As a result, my son will graduate loan free - which is a great gift indeed.

I've said it before and I'll say it again - my son is receiving an outstanding, truly liberal arts education. This semester his Tisch work has gotten him involved in the issue of homelessness - in addition to his work in bio, chem, western political thought and other areas. It's not merely that I'm proud and satisfied as parent re: the quality and scope of his education at Tufts. The bottom line is that he has said he couldn't be happier at any other school.

Tufts University is the place to go if you're interested in a top-notch Liberal Arts education that opens your eyes to the rest of the world.

There's really no other place like it.

(And congratulations of the award!)
