so ive been looking around a bit at posts from past years, and there seems to be somewhat of a consensus that tisch applicants pretty much get screwed on scholarships. does anyone know anything about this at all? i mean, ill take out loans like crazy if i have to in order to go to nyu, but getting aid would be amazing cuz my parents can/will only give me $20,000 a year for college and film/tv is like $53,000/year

For whatever reason, Tisch seems to have less $$ for scholarships than other NYU schools. I have a couple of friends in drama who had majorly high academic stats, like Stern-worthy stats, and they only got a couple thousand each in merit money. If you qualify for need-based aid, it's likely you might get more because they almost always combine merit with people who actually document financial need. Even at that, don't expect a huge f/a award, especially at Tisch. The average NYU-wide is around $19,000 f/a package but you'll find that there are a hell of a lot more that are in the $5000 and below category.

Well, lindseygs, you kind of proved my point. You got $18,000 but the cost of Tisch per year has risen to be just over $50,000 so when you look at it that way, it doesn't sound as good. Tisch is the most expensive school at NYU and anyone who goes there should plan on lots of loans (which actually is true of NYU, in general).

lindsey - so that was all need-based aid? do you mind if i ask what your efc was?

yeah i know nyu is uber expensive. my parents are kind of angry bc ive been offered lots of scholarships at other schools for being a national merit finalist (my grades/sat/ecs are ok, but not stellar. just nm finalists get alotta money from some places for some reason) that i didnt even apply to (up to $92,000) but at nyu i might only get $1000.

its too bad tisch is even worse than general nyu at funds.

lindsey said: "actually tisch is only about $37,000 a year...
i'll reply with more info when i have time but i just needed to clear that incredibly wrong fact"

You might want to have a look at this link:

Those are the current costs for Tischies. Add some spending money on and you'll be at $50,000 in no time. And count on costs going up for next year, they always do! I have several friends in Tisch, I'm in CAS and I can tell you that it's YOU who is "incredibly wrong"! ;)

Tisch does have some merit scholarships (as do other schools at NYU). My daughter got a Trustee Scholarship for $20,000/year to attend Tisch where she is now a freshman. She also got aid in the form of loans on top of that part of the package. The Trustee Scholarship, was explained to me by NYU as being merit based first but that the amount of the merit award would vary or rise if mixed together with the need based aid, if an applicant also applied for financial aid. Someone can get a Trustee Scholarship who did not apply for FA. The amount will reflect, however, if aid was also applied for. Some of these scholarships are listed on the website. We did not even know NYU had merit scholarships until my daughter opened the award letter. Needless to say, it helps. The package my daughter received was one of the best offers of her various acceptances though all the BFA programs seemed to offer some merit scholarships of various amounts, as well as need based aid. Tisch's was the highest scholarship amount. I have read of or know others who have also received scholarships there. The school costs about $49,000. Yes, it is a LOT. However, many other selective schools also cost in that ballpark. I have a kid who goes to Brown and that bill is fairly similar, not much less (before scholarships and loans).

when are letters for scholarships sent out? Would I have already heard since I was accepted early decision? Or do they compare all the ED anf RD kids?

Scholarship info would have been sent out with the acceptance and/or f/a package. E. D. kids would already have heard, unless they've changed things this year.

Sorry to burst your bubble, but Tisch is actually only "$34,780" and I'm quoting that from your provided link. They were talking about how much Tisch costs, not going to NYU and living there. I've seen that page too and that's where I've gotten all my info.

Yes, if you're going to include costs of living, transportation, food and spending money...then it is about $47,000 a year (NOT at least $50,000 like you so adamantly believed, even though you provided that link yourself). I've decided to live in Rubin triple-suite and get on the cheapest meal plan and my costs/yr. come out to $46,000 (including spending money).

In conclusion- If you plan it out right, Tisch does not cost over $50,000 like so many want you to believe. You just have to work on loans, saving up cash, getting a job (work-study), and going about the cheapest lifestyle you can. It's all about personal choice.

Ah, lindsey, the conviction of the uninformed. I'm a sophomore at NYU, I think I know a little bit more about what it costs to go to school there than you do. That link provided an estimate, even at that, the estimate is $47,920, it's a conservative estimate, trust me. It's also for THIS year, which means that for accepted freshmen for next year, you can count on about a 7% increase. Unless you're not planning on living in the city, then you obviously have to include the costs other than tuition! Yes you can reduce your costs by applying for a low cost triple (no guarantee you'll get one) and getting a small mealplan, but trust me, after attending for almost two years now, I guarantee your spending money is going to be much higher than they estimate, unless you want to sit in your dorm every night and do nothing. And you won't want to be doing that if you're in a LCT! If you're a drama major and need to travel to studio three days a week, your transportation costs are going to be higher than estimated. The other costs you need to take into account are travel between home and school, usually at Thanksgiving, Christmas, Spring Break, at the minimum, and if you're from Texas, that's going to be higher than most who attend NYU and live closer. Regardless of what the estimates show, I don't know anyone who hasn't ended up spending more than that, but if you want to ignore that, that's certainly your personal choice. It's best to be fully informed of the costs of living in the city, though.

lol im from texas and if i go to nyu im only coming home for christmas and summer. far too expensive =/

but yeah, the housing fees have already gone up from the current year's. freshman apts have gone up about $300 and the traditional dorms went up a little more than that.
