Hey guys,
So here’s the deal. I currently finished my freshman year at UMBC, and while I liked it, I’ve been thinking hard about transferring. NYU has always been my top choice school. I didn’t do so great in high school, only got a 3.6, but I’ve been doing much better in college. I want to transfer into the Tisch Drama program and I’m hoping that some one could give me some advice. I’ve auditioned for the program two years ago and obviously didn’t get in. Now that I’ve gotten some more experience under my belt and have done a little better in school, im hoping that I stand a chance. Is there anyone out there that has transferred into Tisch drama?

Ah come on guys! I see that there have been a few views of this thread but no responses? I really would love any advice from anyone!

You may not be getting responses because your question is unclear. Are you looking for students who have transferred to Tisch to talk to about their experiences as transfer students? Are you asking if you stand a chance?

If you are within the admitted student academic range for transfer students there is no reason why you would not have a shot at Tisch as a transfer student. As you know you would need to be admitted academically and artistically. If you are not admitted to NYU/ Tisch you will not know whether it was one area, the other, or both that kept you from being admitted.

Students are admitted to Tisch as transfer students each year. I do not know how many more years of college you would need to commit to Tisch, but it would likely extend your college to at least five years (two at UMBC, three at Tisch), possibly six years (all four years at Tisch). I am sure SoozeVT or a Tisch transfer student would be able to give you and idea.

Are finances an issue for you? UMBC is very reasonable for both in-state and out of state students… 2009/ 2010 in-state Tuition/ Room/ Board = $17,922; OOS Tuition/ Room/ Board = $27,263. NYU is a private university and is not known for generous financial aid. 2010/2011 Tuition alone = $41,782. When you add in the cost of room and board the costs = $53,000 to 63,000. Not including fees (for either UMBC or NYU).

You also could make the choice to complete UMBC for undergrad… possibly applying to do the Spring at Tisch program – [Acting: Tisch School of the Arts at NYU](<a href=“Special Programs”>Special Programs) or study abroad for a semester through your university or another program. You could always apply to Tisch for graduate school. Their MFA Acting program is one of the top in the US.

It cannot hurt to apply and audition to transfer and see what happens. Only you and your family can assess whether it is a wise/ do-able financial decision to transfer to Tisch. But, you will not have a decision to make unless you give it a try :).

thank you for your response. At this point I’m not so much worried about the financial issues. I will worry about that if the time comes. I am hoping to talk to some people that went through the Tisch transfer audition. I want to see what it’s like and what kind of grades they had before entering.

My D auditioned as a transfer for Fall 2010 and was not accepted. Her audition included those applying for Freshman status and also transfers all at once. She had decent academics but not stellar. 3.7 GPA, mostly acting/theatre classes. Her letter stated that this year NYU had the most transfer applicants in the history of the school, I believe it was about 5400. She is a strong singer/actress, not so great a dancer. Good luck!

everymom, I think you must have misunderstood the number of transfer applicants. Tisch generally receives between 2500 and 3000 freshman applicants each year. The number of transfer applicants is much smaller than that. I would be very surprised if they have even 500 transfer applicants and that would include internal transfers. It would be impossible for the number to be 5400.

The 5400 must refer to NYU in its entirety, not just Tisch.

hey megzez…i just got into tisch for acting as a transfer after 2 years at Tufts. What did you want to know about the audition? And when would you be auditioning (obviously not for this fall…spring then?)
