TJHSST '09 Senior Destinations

I was searching through old threads and came across a post of TJ's Class of '06 Senior Destinations, so instead of studying for finals, I decided to post this instead. (I'm not sure if TJ counts as a "prep school," so please move this thread to its appropriate place if I posted it in the wrong section. Thanks.)

Congratulations Class of 2009! :)

That is great. However, this is a HUGE class. Using the popular ivy+SM percentage, it’s still not in the same league as the top tier boarding schools.

NoDrama - I don’t think that it is accurate to say that this school is not in the same league as the top tier boarding schools - the tricky part is that it is a public high school in Virginia so there will be many smart kids choosing to go to UVA and College of William and Mary - if you remove those kids from the stats, that leaves 250+ kids in the class and close to 80 of them going to Ivy+SM - that is pretty impressive in my book

I agree that in a school like TJHSST, there must be more students that would choose not to attend an ivy for financial reasons, but can you assume that all those who went to UVA and College of William and Mary would otherwise make to ivy+SM?

Some might not choose to attend ivies for financial reasons and some might just find a perfect school for them that is not any ivy. Either way, TJHSST is a top notch school and there is no question in my mind that it is in the same league as any other top school, whether that school is part of a made up acronym or not.

US News and World Report chose TJ as #1 in the nation for past two years running. I’m not sure if you know any of the kids who attend TJ but if you do then you know that they are some of the most brilliant, dedicated, awesome students you can imagine. These kids will change the world.

This discussion is about college matriculation stats. If you have read my post carefully, I was only commenting on the “popular ivy+SM percentage”. I didn’t say the school is not in the same league as other great schools. The school of course is a well recognized excellent school with the most bright students around VA. I was also going to say it’s unfair to ask for the same kind of ivy percentage from TJ because it is a huge class.

My husband (a college admissions guy) says TJ is the best school in the country. Our daughter goes to SPS though…

Your husband says that? OK. US News says that too, probably didn’t compare it with SPS though.

haha.

I am currently attending TJ as a freshman, but I will be off to andover next year.

it is fun to see people arguing about TJ vs. boardin schools.

Regarding that list:

Wow.

Where’s the Harvard -Westlake list?
BTW - my oldest (HW graduate) graduates from Northwestern this week where he says over 70% of his class has NO job going forward…which means?

Which means Northwestern is not good enough? No, kidding! Which means the economy is that bad. The students who have taken things seriously and worked hard don’t deserve this.

I have a lot of friends that attend this school and they think it is the hardest school in the nation.

I have to say it’s surprising when anyone knows who, or what, TJ is, so it’s exciting to see there’s some sort of recognition out there (since, really, high schools aren’t all that notable or well-known).

As a recently-graduated TJ senior (heading to MIT), I’ll have to clear up that there are some inaccuracies in the newspaper (where that information was published): there’s an additional person going to MIT, and minus one from Carnegie Mellon and from Dartmouth. The names aren’t listed here, but my dear friend is going to MIT now and one person (who hasn’t fully mastered quantum mechanics, sadly) was listed under both Dartmouth and Cornell. The total class was 454, I don’t know if the numbers add up to that.

I just wanted to clear it up, lest anyone thought there was any inaccurate information - or, nay - MISTAKES on the internets.

Thanks for posting the information!

You have the makings of a fine meticulous engineer:)

Well TJHSST sucks if you don’t like math and science. I’m actually applying to TJHSST and a bunch of boarding schools, including SPS and Andover. I am more a liberal arts girl which is why boarding school is an option for me. And boarding school has more connections.
At thomas jefferson, athletics are terrible except track, golf, and tennis or whatever. Uh, the science department and the music departments are amazing. Many of the people of the freshman class had a perfect math SAT score by the 7th grade. Pure geniuses, I tell you.

So much people going to university of Virginia and Williams&Mary. 49 people are headed to HYPSM. That is about 13 percent of the class? Wow.
