Hey guys!

So firstly I just wanted to say I know that TJ is not a prep school (it's just a public magnet) but I really couldn't figure out another place to put this thread. I'm sorry if there was a right forum (I'm pretty new here) and I'm in the wrong place :S

For those who don't know, TJ (Thomas Jefferson High School for Science and Technology) is a public magnet school in Fairfax County, Northern Virginia.

So anyway. I'm applying for Sophomore year and I am currently a freshman. The reason I didn't apply for Freshman year is I didn't know whether I wanted to go and also missed the deadline.

I'm also applying with the SAT rather than the PSAT (missed test date for that) and my scores are not that great: 1900 (630 M 630 CR 640 W) but I do have all straight A's.
That was also the first standardized test I have ever taken.

My EC's are okay: I'm a black-belt in Taekwondo, I tutor kids and have been enrolled in an NSF science project.

I'm also home-schooled (have been all my life) with 10 credits for 9th Grade (I know that's a lot but I took a bunch of electives like Geology and Argumentation/Logic as well as Communications.)

The only thing is that they only let in about 20% of all applicants for sophomore year - I really hope I make the cut.

I'm planning on doing either medicine or law and am currently split somewhat equally between the two, and TJ would be great for me if I wanted to do Med.
My backup plan if I don't get into TJ is to take AP classes online/CLEP/community college classes. I have three years until I graduate and am 14 right now.

I hope this wasn't too much of a lengthy post.

So do you guys think I have a chance of getting in?
I would really appreciate if someone who attends TJ right now would answer. How many froshmores have you guys gotten recently?

You’re only 14?? O.o why aren’t you applying for freshmen year??

woeishe,

A couple of reasons, actually: One, I’m already in Algebra II/Pre-Calc (because I’m homeschooled and a grade ahead) and I’ve got all the requirements for applying to Sophomore year already under my belt. Two: (this reason is kind of silly but it’s there nonetheless) I know a a whole bunch of people who’ll be attending TJ this year as freshman and most of them are 12/13 so I’ll feel kind of old - I’m turning 15 in November. Third, I missed the deadline for applying as a Freshman and now this is all I can actually do.
Also, I’m more familiar with the SAT and I didn’t want to bother with the TJ Admissions test and round. I know that sounds stupid. It really sounded better in my head.

So what do you think? You think I have a chance?

Anyone else?
I was hoping more people knew about TJ around here…

I would’ve suggested applying for freshmen year because you don’t have to decide until you make it in. I have friends who got in, but ended up not going. I don’t know about where you got the statistic of 20% because the incoming freshmen class only has about a 16% chance. As for your credits, it depends on what level they are (honors) and if they fit the requirements.
You need:
English 1 credit
Algebra 1 1 credit
Geometry 1 credit
Biology 1 credit
Health/PE 1 credit
Foreign Language 1 credit
Elective 1 credit

It doesn’t seem like you have many extracurricular activities, but if you’re committed and have spent a long time doing them, mention that. You SAT scores probably won’t help you, especially the 630 on the math section. The TJ test, in my opinion, is a lot easier than the SAT in difficulty. TJ is definitely better prep for going into medicine, as compared to being homeschooled, because of the lab experience.

Not so sure about your chances of getting in, and I’m not clear on the acceptance rate for froshmores either. I’m pretty sure less than 10 get in every year, probably less than five. If you get in, you have to remember that it will take time to commute to and from school, on top of the new environment and course work.
