TJHSST Junior Year Schedule

Hi! I'm a freshman at TJ and I have been freaking out over junior year. Going from 8 hours of sleep a night to 3 hours is terrifying. I know people that sleep three hours a night and those that sleep seven, both taking the same AP's and everything. I am not an overachieving CC'er, so I'm planning on taking three AP's: APUSH, AP AB Calc, and AP Chem. Are there are TJ people out there that can voice their opinion?
I'm involved in two or three extracurriculars and have all A's at this point in freshman year. I'm willing to sacrifice an hour or so of sleep, but I know I won't be able to function at all on just three hours of rest.

HELP IM FREAKING OUT

Have fun at junior college

Not srs

I’m friends with a TJ student who’s a junior and he always complains about the lack of sleep. All I can say from observing him is to manage time wisely. He has a long bus ride to and from school so he either catches up on sleep or does his hw.

I’m taking AB Calc and APUSH but not at TJ. But from what my friend has said, AB Calc isn’t too bad at TJ. Not sure about APUSH. But APUSH at my school is brutal so I’d be cautious about taking that.

Honestly, just enjoy freshman year. Don’t worry about junior year so soon, live a little. Do stuff you like and try new things. Best of luck.

kypdurron: omg what do u mean by that

animpaffliction: How much sleep deprivation does he suffer from? Is he the type of person that procrastinates a lot? Sorry, I know I’m just a freshman but I’d like to have everything planned out so I don’t have to fret later on.

Well it’s good that you’re planning ahead. Most high schoolers just wing it as they go.
As far as I know, he doesn’t procrastinate much. I think it’s just the homework load that keeps him up. He says the earliest he’s gone to bed is 11:45. Latest is 2:00. And these days he says it’s been 2:00. Make your own judgement based on this information.

animpaffliction: Well, he may be one of those people taking like 4 or 5 AP classes. I’m not. 3 is good enough, thank you very much. I acknowledge that I won’t get the luxurious 8 hours of sleep, but 3 is not okay. I’m assuming you’re a junior. Do you think the difference between 2 and 3 AP classes 11th grade will make or break it for me?

Yeah, he’s taking 4, I believe. Yup, I’m a junior. And no matter what classes you take junior year, you will not be getting more than 6 hours of sleep. Are you asking if it will make a difference to college admissions officers? Well I think it’s better to take 2 APs that matter to you and do really well in them rather than 3 APs that you’re not doing so well in. But my advice to you is don’t take an AP just because it’s AP. Take it because you’re actually interested in the subject. I know at my school, people compete against each other in the number of APs they’re taking and that’s like a prestige issue at my school but don’t fall for that.

Feel free to ask me any questions about high school. If it’s a specific question about TJ, I can run it by my friend.

animpaffliction: Can you ask him about APUSH? That’s the one AP I’m sort of iffy about. Do you think its possible to self study for APUSH while taking US History Honors? TJ’s AP classes tend to go overboard with the information and the work and it’s kind of like ultra-mega AP.

animpaffliction: But do AP classes really take that much time? I find it hard to imagine working on homework for 9 hours on just 2 AP classes since we have block schedule.

He says that APUSH is pretty hard but I think it’s at the level of APUSH at my school. And at my school, we have only one APUSH teacher and she’s pretty hard. Like, we just had our first test and the average was like a B-.

I don’t think AP classes take THAT much time. I’d say about 2-2.5 hours per class but even that could be an exaggeration, depending on what kind of a teacher you get.

animpaffliction: Thank God. Even at TJ standards, 9 hours on homework is a bit much. Also, what type of homework does one get from AP classes?

Well no matter how inhumane we think our teachers are, they do realize we take other classes and have lives. Umm it really depends on the AP class. For history classes, there’s a lot of reading and outlining. English has a lot of writing, obviously.

What about AP Calc or Chem?
