Any advice on the personal statements? (how long it should be, what to write about..)

Keep it short. If you're doing the application by hand, only use the space they've given you. If you're doing the application online, i would still recommend trying to keep it about the same length as it would have been on the paper app. I was just totally honest in mine, no bull****. but the main thing, keep it short. i've heard that nyu appreciates brevity, especially in the short essay section. good luck!

Instead of writing the personal statement response by hand, can I simply cut out and paste a typedwritten 10 font response within the allotted space? Or would that count against me? Thanks in advance.

dont worry about it...many of mine were well over the limit

Instead of making it look sloppy by cutting out and pasting on a paper application, I would just do it online. It's fast and easy, and NYU prefers online apps to paper apps (they mentioned that at a meeting I attended in the beginning of November).

Hope I can help!
Love Bry

thanks, bry,

but i'm more concerned with the cut off (if there is any) on the online app. However, if i was to make a font 10, and fit it into the space neatly on paper app, would the adcom overllok the statements from being too excessive? I don't think it is, but i'm worried about the font 10 paste as being wordy by their standards. Thanks again in advance.

By all means, be concise in whatever you are trying to convey. When I was writing my personal statement, I asked the admissions office personally how long it should be; they said between 400 and 500 words. Hopefully that can guide you along your way!

In my honest opinion, do it online! It seriously makes life SO much less stressful!! =)

Take care! IM me sometime: Bryana0510

i did 900+ , i dun think they care

keep them short- you can always type them up on a separate sheet and then just include that with your app, that's what i did. i was creative too, i made mine funny and unique, not just "i went to the store last sunday and bought some eggs"- i did what i could with what i was given.

saysua I applied via the paper application and was accepted ED. For the personal statements I tried to keep them in the character count that the online version said, however I did go over for some. I simply printed it out on a separate piece of paper and attached it with paper clips to the same page and wrote under the statements ATTACHED. I think that is fine because I was accepted. Good Luck! Hope to see you next year

settleboy has almost identitical sat scores but have of course significantly higher GPA...:( i regret it so much...why the hell didn't i study...:(
i am not sure,,,but is going to an OK or less than OK school better than like...private schools and top public schools?

I did the same as settleboyILC.

Thanks everyone for their comments. I'm going to go along with settleboy and do the attach version.

kjayson,

kjayson,
I don't think a top notched college is going to play a major part in determining what you're going to be in 10 years. Rather, it depends on your internal motivation. (my psych/history teacher is a harvard grad-->public school, not that anything is wrong with that) So, the world doesn't end there once you're rejected. For me, yea, prolly I'll suscribe to prozac for a month or 2, but I'll survive.
But if you're really adamnat about NYU, try RD, maybe persistance is a plus this time around.
And to really answer your question personally, if i don't get accepted to a NYC school, i'd rather settle for a nice, quiet, suburban university where there's less competition, friendly environment, with the same potential results. Eh, I kno the suburbs is really a polarized decision from NYC.

how the hell did u guys get the answers in the online supp's word limit... mine are all getting cut! what do i do!!!!

oh and is it true that.. if u apply common app online u can't do the supp online?

.... i think i have to switch to paper app because this word limit is RIDICULOUS!!! i can't get my Q1 and Q4 answers in!!!!

OMG.. i don't GET this email... ok it says:

We reviewed our application files on the Common Application web site this morning and see that you have submitted an application to New York University. We are delighted that you have included NYU among your possible college choices.

For the moment, however, YOU ARE NOT AN APPLICANT! Until you also complete and submit the on-line NYU Supplement to the Common Application your application will not actually be sent to us. For NYU, the on-line Common Application and the on-line NYU Supplement are "a package deal", and BOTH must be submitted in order for us to receive either document. Although you have "Submitted" your on-line application, it is not actually transmitted to NYU until you also complete and submit our on-line Supplement. The good news is that you don't have to re-submit your on-line application; once you complete and submit the on-line Supplement, both your application and your supplement will be forwarded to us electronically. (Note that if you mailed a paper version of the NYU Common Application Supplement, you still must go on-line and release your application by completing the on-line Supplement.)

Of course, you already may know all of this, and you may simply be working on the short answer questions that are part of our Supplement. But, in the event that you weren't aware of the important connection between having NYU receive your on-line Common Application and submitting your on-line NYU Supplement, we wanted to bring it to your attention.

So what is it.. I've submitted common app online .. can I submit the supp by paper? but then I have to do it online too?
AHHHH don't get it!

silverwaves, I think you should probably call the admissions office and straighten this out. There are very strict rules for submitting the pieces of the app electronically and if you don't submit the supplement properly, NYU will NOT get your app either. In fact, I've checked back and unrealfire provided you with a link explaining this, in answer to a previous question of yours last week. Here is the link again:

and here is a link to that thread. It looks like you didn't read her post.

aw, thanks alwaysamom :)

i'm gonna call NYU on monday.. and decide what i'll do.
i just REALLY don't wanna cut my NYU supplement answers..

i don't see how people wrote like 900 words and applied online.. :/

do i just add it to the additional info?

ughh NYU confuses me..

alwaysamom - just so you know, I'm a male ;)
