TO ALL Current Greenies!!!!!!

How is Dartmouth with the Financial Aid??????????? I am from a low-income ($35000), single-parent household. Can anybody who goes to Dartmouth (or whoever) talk about what exactly am I looking at as far as the amount of loan vs. grants/scholarships?

Also, do you guys believe that Dartmouth will be more generous with the financial aid packages for their highly desired candidates (like myself) who recieved likely lettters?

Congratulations on your likely letter and your move from lurker to participant.

All of Dartmouth's financial aid is based on financial need. They use a combination of the federal and institutional methodologies to come up with your award.

I can only talk to last years financial aid package as we have not recieved any notices of increased tutition etc. Keep in mind, that I am giving you a ball park figure which could be more or less. Daughter recieved a better financial aid Package from Williams, asked for a financial review from Dartmouth and Dartmouth met the Williams package.

The cost of a Dartrtmouth education for 1 year consist of the following:

[ul]
[]Tution $30,279
[]Room $5,400
[]Board $3,724
[]Fees $297
[]Books $1,122
[]Misc. 1264
[li]Transportation cost vill vary depending on where you love. We live in NYC, can you believe D got a "0" for transportation cost
[/li]

[li]** Total cost $42,086 **
[/li]

[/ul]

The family responsibility will be broken down as follows:

[ul]
[li] Student Contribution $2,225 (which you should get from summer earnings, savings etc. this part is pretty much going to be non-negotiable. the amount will go up year over year. If you don't earn the money, the school is not going to increase your package, so if you may have to take out increased loans. If you are working now, save. save the graudation, birthday monies to help off set this. My daughter worked last summer saved the money, ended up using it for spending money on campus, books misc. stuff. )
[/li]

[li]Parent Contribution Varies by what is on your fafsa. In our case it was a little less than what the Fafsa was. For the sake of this scenario we will use an EFC of $3,500
[/li]

[li] Total family contibution ** $5,725**
[/li]

[/ul]

** Need as Determined by Dartmouth $36,361 ** Dartmouth will meet 100% of this need.

I would not be suprised if your package consist of the following components

[ul]
[]Stafford loan $2,650
[] PLUS Loan $2,000
[] Work Study $1,500
[] Dartmouth General Scholarship $30,211

** total aid $36,382 **

[/ul]

Keep in mind, you willalso need a computer when you get on campus. You can bring your own, order one through Dartmouth (where you can pay for it in advance, or they will give you a loan to pay for it). You will hve to demonstrate that your parent has adequate health insurance that will cover your medical expenses when you are in Hanover for anything that is not covered by student health (emergency room visits, hospital stay).

hope this helps. I don't know what your actual numbers will turn out to be but I can tell you this, your Dartmouth education will be affordable to you and your family. And if you have to work a little harder to earn your share remember that the School is picking up the lions share of your education. What ever you have to work to get or borrow, remember that it is an investment in you.
