To all those who were deferred (which seems to be many), what are you sending UMich besides your grades?

What can I send? My school year ended (I’m international), so this is pretty much a rejection.

What else can we send?

Well I have an updated US SAT II score that I’ll send (770) rather than the 710 that they had. Maybe a letter. IDK.

I’m going to take the SAT in January. UMich only has an ACT score from me (34), but I’m aiming for a 2300+ SAT. If I get 2250+ on it then I’ll end it.
I might send a letter too. After xmas break I’ll talk to my college counselors and they’ll advise me on what I should send

^If they don’t accept you with a 2300+ they’re crazy.

For supplemental information/essays are you just going to write about why UMich is your top choice? And how long?

Hopefully I’ll win a medal at my next Academic Decathlon scrimmage so I’ll have an award to send.

I’m considering signing up to take the ACT again. If I do, I’ll send that.

My transcript for this semester is looking to be pretty strong so I’m hoping for that to help

^Same. I think by FAR the most important thing we send is our first semester transcript. So we all gotta keep working hard!

I’m sending my transcript from a community college where i took courses at during a couple summers. I got A’s there so it would boost my GPA. I forgot to send it in time for EA, but I guess it will come into use now?

Massgirl92, if you pull a 2300 you need to be shooting for more than Michigan.

^I am. I’ll hear from Duke again (deferred ED). I’ll also get RD decisions from Northwestern, Georgetown, Vandy, Emory, Tufts, and Wash U. My top choices are Duke, Northwestern, Gtown, and Michigan.

I’m not sending anything. I got deferred by MIT, and accepted to 2 other higher rated programs for chemical engineering, both of which have accepted me to their honors programs and given me their largest scholarships. Michigan just doesnt even seem to care about getting good students. All they care about is getting in-state students and URM’s. No reason for me to waste more time trying to go to a school that doesn’t really want me. For other OOS students who got deferred, I encourage you to apply to Minnesota, Wisconsin, Purdue, Ohio St… etc. All have lower price tags by far and give out more generous merit aid.

Congrats to those already accepted, and good luck to everyone else RD who still really wants to go to Mich.

^^^It sounds to me that you never really planned to go to Michigan no matter what because of costs. The admissions office might have sensed that too. Who knows exactly what criteria they are looking for, but one of them for sure is to try to offer admissions to truly interested students.

I was very interested in Michigan. It was by far my favorite campus of any school I applied to. I believe I showed my interest in my essays also. I also thought my stats would be good enough to compete for the few merit scholarships UMich has to offer, which explains why I applied despite the high cost.

Hey Massgirl, I saw you in duke forum as well and I also got deferred from Duke and Umich. I’m considering taking another SAT in January but how much do you think it would help for us to get in?

oh **** my senior grades are…terrible
well… it’s my fault haha don’t make same mistake guys!

Just a thought… perhaps in your essays about why Michigan is your top choice, if you intend to send them, you could also write about why you are a good choice for Michigan… like, what you will add to the student body and the university community, why they should accept you over someone else. Just my two cents.

@tofusalmon

i was deferred both also, im taking subject tests in january which my guidance counselor recommended that I do

@bear1993: yeah…it seems that our school lists are pretty much similar…It’s like so many people just got into duke after the admission result comes out and I just disappeared:(
