Im a violinist and i sent some paganini caprices and ernst study #6 variations on last rose of summer

I play piano, and I sent the Schumann Fantasy in C Major First Movement. I won some regional competitions with it so I figured it would be a good bet.

Im a drummer - I sent in some live recordings with different jazz groups and an original snare drum piece I wrote a while back.

I played the First Movement of the Grieg Piano Concerto

Wow - - - the Grieg. That's darn tough!

saxfreq1128, why did you send nothing but showpieces, just out of curiosity? That's kind of interesting. Are you applying for Harvard/NEC?
I'm a violinist applying RD for H/NEC. My supplementary tape will include a selection from my NEC audition repertoire: the Mendelssohn Concerto 1st mvt, the Adagio and Fugue of the Bach G minor Sonata, Harbison's 1st Song of Solitude, the 4th mvt of the Franck Sonata, a Gavinies etude, and a Rode caprice.

Whoa, whoa, no no no---

I didn't send anything. =) I was just commenting to gmcwil42 that the Grieg concerto is very difficult; I'm really, really impressed.

I didn't apply as a musician, by any means. I applied as a writer/journalist. :-D I'm just a bit more "up" on classical music than, I guess, many other non-classical-musicians. (It's great inspiration for writing.)

Double bassist...they asked for me to send in a short tape if I was interested in the HRO. Sent in Rabbath's Etude No. 10 for now...

fiddlefrog i think you were talking about me

well i figured i really didn't want to play any overplayed pieces because it's a bit harder to stand out when dozens of other violinists are playing the same piece

fiddlefrog, do you think any other harvard EAers will be submitting paganini? I highly doubt that anyone else did the ernst last rose of summer because it is somewhat obscure. I was going to do the erlkonig for solo violin but i wasn't familiar enough with it.

hmm i seem to be the only non-classical musician here, though I did play classical guitar for about 4 years. I play the guitar, bass, banjo, and keyboards. I've recorded about 3 tapes worth of material on my 4-track tape recorder, so I guess in retrospect I should have submitted something. Oh well, i dont believe they'd be missing out on much.

thanks saxfreq
I am applying Early Action but as a biology major.
I just sent the Concerto as a supplemental part of my application.

You must be a monster piano player. Best of luck to you all!

Is this Harvard/NEC thing harvard's equivalent of the Columbia/Juilliard program?

Sorry sabinscabin (interesting username, by the way), I was talking to you. Paganini is a pretty common choice, you won't likely be the only one. I agree that you'll probably be the only one playing the Last Rose of Summer, but I disagree that it's obscure-- it's famous for being unusually difficult, which is why noone plays it! Congratulations on being able to pull it off... fun with double harmonics and left hand pizzicatto...

The Harvard/NEC thing is somewhat different from the Columbia/Juilliard. I've talked about it on this forum a couple of times.

i sent in one of the films i made, doubt they actually watched it though

any clarinetists here? i sent a cd of the poulenc sonata and a rose etude. how much does the supplement help the application though? i suppose it depends on the performing level of the applicant, but i did read in a college advice book once that you shouldn't send tapes if the college already know you're good (like if you are an all-state band/orch/choir member.) is that true? ahhh, i'm confused.

not all all-state band/orch/choir members can play chopin/liszt/paganini/ernst

:)

Indeed! And even if they were all really good, you still want to demonstrate the nature of your musical personality, and how it connects to the rest of your application-- not just "proficiency."

I play piano. I sent in Chopin Polonaise Militaire and a movement of a beethoven sonata.

which beethoven Sonata?
