I really doubt they'll listen to all of it though.

speaking of mephisto waltz, has anyone ever heard/played the mephisto waltz arranged for solo violin by nathan milstein? It's supposedly much harder than both the last rose variations AND the erlkonig by ernst.

It's OUTRAGEOUSLY hard. Really cool, too.
dawgfather, that's pretty darn impressive!
(I like your "all the E-flat sonatas...)
and wow! Islamey AND Gaspard.

Ok, wait. All Chopin etudes and all Bach PnFs??? That's almost unheard of. Are you kidding? If not, you're a very accomplished 18 year old!

You know, harvard says in its supplement advice that cds or tapes should be less than 10 minutes total. I've heard from various sources (although not really reliable) that if it's over 15 minutes they'll just throw it out without even considering it. So if you put on like 4 hours of music it'll just **** em off and they'll throw it all out.

P.S. It was Sonato no. 7 by Beethoven. Also, about the 15 minutes thing the reason i looked into it so much is because i've completely mastered Rhapsody in Blue (the best song EVER!!!!!!!!!) and i really wanted to send that but it's definitely more than 10 minutes so I left it out. Plus, I just want them to know that I'm decent, I don't plan on majoring as a pianist, or having this be my main way of entrance. I play a lot of chopin etudes and nocturnes as well, but i choose the polonaise even though it's pretty simple (I've known it since 7th grade) I can play it perfectly and it's pretty big and flashy. We'll see though.

I can't help you in the ways you mentioned-- I've only heard it on a CD from a public library far from home. If I remember rightly, it was on a Rachel Barton cd of demonically themed showpieces.

well i'm applying RD: i play the flute and will be sending 1st mvmt of Bach Sonata in E Minor, Fantaisie Pastorale Hongroise by Doppler, and the 2nd mvmt of Mozart Concerto in G Major.. i will also probably send in a harp cd.

Im deciding whether or not to send Beethovens Moonlight Sonata and Mozarts Sonata in C+, both very popular pieces, for piano. I dont know if they are going to cut it or if theyre overrated. Any thoughts...

im in mass. all state orchestra violinist
i was thinking of sending maybe kreisler and wieniovsky (sorry i cant spell) but i figured that those are pretty common and that many of the ppl would be better than i
i ended up getting deferred EA lol...anyway during an adcom interview the adcom noted that i hadnt send any tapes or anything...which i guess might have been uncommon for someone with allstate?
no clue...anyway im still not sending in anything lol cuz i think i'll sound like crap to them...ill just write my violin awards on my apps

Right. Islamey, Gaspard, the 4th Ballade, Rach's 3rd, all the P&F's and etudes...are the pieces you wish you could play? Forty-plus year old pros don't have that massive of a repertoire under their fingers. Unless you're a young Kissin or Argerich or you play all of those pieces like crap, I doubt it.

violinist- wieniawski no.2 first mvt, beethoven romance, bach partita no.3, gershwin prelude transcribed for violin (its a pretty bad recording though, overall)

Im gonna be quite honest. The dawg father, i wanna know how many hours you practice every day, cuz u need to practice like at least 8 hours to succesfully complete some of those concertos, like the rach 3, unless you play them like crap. I dont know how you learned all the chopin etudes, all the prelude and fugues, and all those liszt pieces and remembered and played them all, but you are one fine pianist for playing them! I myself am a junior, and I might send in a lizst piece like Transcendental Etude no. 11 or a couple chopin etudes. Im not sure yet.

tennispro- i think all of us who send in CDs practice like 22 hours or so.. :) i practice 4 hours a day.. that is, if i don't get lazy .. hope that helps

I am a junior so with all the pressure from junior year, I only get to practice like an hour on the weekdays and 2 hours the weekends. But senior year im practicing like 6-8 hours every day. On average, how much do the rest of you guys practice, I mean all you seniors?
