Essay: Regular essay was okay. Talked a bit about interacting with other cultures during deployment and how that gave me a fresh perspective on my own culture. The supplementary essay was really special to me: I wrote a small bit about the Langston Hughes poem “A dream deferred”, and how, as a younger man I had always wanted to learn music. More specifically, the cello. Well, at the ripe old age of 25 I finally made a go at it, and a year afterwards was able to play, in recital, the music that inspired me.

General Comments: While I feel I deserve to be admitted and am going, I didn’t think my app was that great. I did a reasonably good job with my essay (had my English teacher read over it a couple times), and my ACT score is pretty good, but my GPA was on the low side (3.6 or B average while my app was evaluated). For what its worth, I was rejected everywhere else I applied (UCB, UCLA, UCSB)</p>
