To all the brownies out there

Could those of you enrolled please briefly explain what your “hooks” were.

Thanks in advance

If you’re looking for hooks, most people will probably say they didn’t have any (hooks being URM, family-member, endowment). Now, there may be things like accomplishments (national competitions, nationally talented athlete, etc.) that helped get people in.

But about hooks: they may be overexaggerated in importance. I know a girl whose sibling is going to Brown. She got into Stanford, but was rejected from Brown. Go figure.

As for mine: I didn’t really have any hooks. I think you’re looking more at accomplishments, or things that they think made their application stand out. For me, I personally think the best thing about my application was how, in two different essays in the supplement I showed my love for science and learning since I was a little kid, giving specific examples and explanations.

It’s Brunonian.

As for my own hook, it was something pretty rare so there’s no point in mentioning it because it’s not something you have much control over.

I’m a Brownie :P

I wrote a really really long extended research paper. I spent a lot of time on it. I got really into it and integrated it into my application. Then I sent the research paper to them. Then I got in.

I also had a lot of leadership/teamwork things to go with all this self-starter-ness. So there.

you don’t have to have a hook to get into brown, so don’t stress if you don’t have one
also ignore the fact that i just said “don’t” three times

Hooks, as other people have mentioned, are generally things that a person can’t help, like race, gender, socioeconomic background, geographic background, whether or not you’re the first in you family (ever) to go to college, etc. I myself am a Korean-American male from Long Island who whole family (grandparents, aunts, uncles, parents, etc.) have attended at least some college- no hooks.

However, maybe you could ask what people think got them into Brown (which is what I think you meant to ask). Take a gander at this pretty recent thread asking the same thing, if you so please:

being awesome was my hook
