Hi there!

I've talked to a lot of teachers, read a lot of info, etc. etc. on what Oberlin is looking for and the best way to get in. I was wondering, however, if anyone who has made it in has any advice on the matter. I'm interested in the vocal performance section, and I've heard it's mainly about the audition, but I'd like to hear from you!

Thanks!

I just graduated double degree. conservatory admissions are 99% based on your audition.
also, the voice department at oberlin is not for everyone. they tend to be very focused on cultivating voices to sing 18th and 19th century opera. If you imagine yourself also singing in any 21st century style (ie, pop, jazz, extended vocal techniques) or in medieval/rennaissance styles, you might consider applying to the college with intention to major in college music, or other schools.

(college music means that you get your degree from the college, not the conservatory, but that you have more flexibility in what you study -- if you want to sing rennaissance music, you can be in the appropriate ensembles, get some voice training, and take the relevant theory/history classes, without being a voice major and thus required to develop a bel canto style and potentially run afoul of your voice teacher when you study older music)
