You are annoying.

No matter what your race, if you fit, you’re in, if you don’t, you’re not.

No matter what your gender, if you fit, you’re in, if you don’t, you’re not.

Stop starting flames on the blog because you are taking away attention from people that have REAL questions.

How can you explain the admission of many other Asian males (like myself) if MIT is so against them? (and I’m from NJ too! so don’t give me the geographical diversity crap).

A deferral isn’t a personal attack. And even if you think so, you werern’t one who was rejected. Maybe we can turn this around and say you weren’t rejected because you are Asian. Try that out.

At least have the decency to wait til you are rejected to start being an ass.

The race box is “optional”. That means you do NOT have to respond to that!

You are annoying.

where's 9. ?

or better yet, I'll add it in

You are REALLY annoying

Honestly "Another Asian Boy", Id feel different if I honestly believe you would make the same scene if you where accepted. But you just can't take a deferral (which is a lot better than a rejection). Anyway, I think this board has had enough of this crap for now.

"You validate people's lives by your attention."

~unknown

Aww, now.

I think someone does wrong when they identify the personality with the actions. So I think "Another Asian Boy" should stay, and I don't think at his core he's annoying or insecure or defensive or bitter. I'm sure he's a lovely person in real life.

But I do think it'd be nicer for most people if he weren't so self-righteous about himself--if he didn't act as if everyone who disagrees with him is feeding the world lies and has succumbed to hate, if he didn't act as if he is the only brave soul willing to stand up to this heneious injustice. Except that 90% of the people who read his comments give him nothing but grief and hatred, so he's only reciprocating. And you must admit he's got a great debate tactic (the holy crusade--if you are "for" it you are pure, if you are "against" it you are evil, and there is no in-between), and a lot of my frustration in reading his posts is that I know I would personally use his tactics if I had something to pursue, and I know there's nothing much I can do to combat those tactics.

Someone has to stand up and say, "Seriously, let's forgive our misconceptions of each other's worth as human beings and start rational debate without personality attacks. Let's forgo assumptions of "truth" and "discrimination"." And I don't think AAB can be the first to do that, because he's one against many. So I guess that's what I'm attempting here. It's also a slippery slope, because even if we all agree that "whatever we logically work out to be the solution, we'll all change our minds to think that" I think there's a real danger of a heirarchy in the end. That is to say, if AAB finally proves his point, then we're afraid he'll say/think/exude, "See, little silly children, I was correct. I am thus above you in maturity, intelligence, and moral development. You are racist and sexist." And I can postulate that AAB worries that if he is in the end shot down with finality, we'll be able to conclude, "Bwaha, see, you WERE just an annoying little selfish spoiled prick who got his feelings hurt by a deferral. Silly child, we were right all along, and thus we are better than you."

It's really, really hard to keep discussion to discussion without bringing "personality" into the fray. Or emotion. Or ESPECIALLY judgement. What do we not want to hear? "Asians are blatantly discriminated against. Males are blatantly discriminated against." Why? Because I, at least, am afraid that the next thing to be considered "truth" will be: "THEREFORE, the struggles of other races and definitely women are hereby invalidated. Let us take away ALL equality of these peoples thereof. In fact, let us take away their humanity (no longer will they be considered "peoples"). Males (and whites and asians) are infinitely superior to females (and other races) and thus this wrong is infinitely more henious than anything these animals may have experienced in past times, or now. Any and all females and underrepresented minorities in all top-level positions of power, wealth, and education do not deserve to be there under any circumstances." I know this is VERY extreme, and I know I also take a more gendered veiw of it, but these ideas are the very core reason why I think the discussion irks so many people. And of course, it is not what AAB propounds at all. Please do not think I am insinuating that... because I don't wish to even begin to assume anything about his inner character.

I must give props where they are due, and I must say that AAB has been fairly civil, insofar as he has been willing to admit errors in his thinking if facts are CLEARLY presented to him, or answers given to him straight from the horse's mouth.

So, in conclusion, be nice to people! And, um... kittens? And starshine and moonbeams! And stuff.

This post is written off the top of my head, so I may come back in two days and read it and say, "Ehhh.... that's not REALLY what I think... I could have said that better... no, that's not what I meant!" And of course I'll always be willing to accept criticism on my opinion, just as long as you don't condescend! And just so nobody thinks I'm being condescending, um... I'm sorry! You're cool! Yay!

God I'm a squishy moderate. I'll never get elected to anything.

oh JLP, always trying to take my glory, hahaha jp...good post! good points. read the whole thing even though its long kiddos!

You know I hate you baby doll!

Haha, that IS long.. sheesh.

That's true. It's a free society.

I just registered to say:

fight the good fight

discrimination is wrong

we must end discrimination against Asians NOW!

That said, I leave you with this.

Every day goes by and people continue to hate on Asians.

Finally, a shoutout to my soldier theleet. JLP, you are ok in my book.

end hate.

PS. I could care less about your opinion about me and what I do. Was MLK annoying? I bet all those white southerners thought he was. Why didn't you just join the party and flame me on Matt's blog? Registration is such a pain. If you want to contact me, do it there, im out.

don't compare yourself to MLK

If Asian Americans all don't stand up right now to impeach Bush, it will only become worse.

............... ;)

I just started thinking about the comparison to MLK and I started laughing. Not a negative laughing, like "who does he think he is" but about the literal comparsion. I thought about Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. sitting at a computer and posting comments in another person's blog and on a message board.

I agree that AnotherAsianBoy has the right to say what he wants in regards to questioning the admissions process at MIT. I also have the right to say that even if I did agree with what he stands for, I still find the approach annoying. I respect AnotherAsianBoy for finding something he believes in and has chosen to fight for, but I'm tired of him and other people fighting about it.

You think you are a martyr? Yeah you can voice your opinion but you are no martyr. You aren't the savior of the Asian race. Actually, as an Asian I can say you are making us look bad. That is pretty rediculous.

And you are VERY unprepared for college and the real world. You can't hide behind the "discrimination is bad" all your life. You will be faced with some sort of discrimination in your life and you have to realize sometimes there is nothing you can do about it. Instead you have to learn to deal and cope with the world, no matter how harash it may be. And it's not just you as an Asian. EVERYONE at some point feels discrimination. People hate on blacks, jews, hispanics, asians, whites, every single day.

You say you want to figh the good fight. But MLK didn't want that. He wanted peace. He found peaceful means of doing so. If you really want to constructively attack the AA issue, I suggest you use some other means to solve the problem than accusing MIT of discriminating against you. Maybe start out by petitioning and sending it to the government. Write to the presidents of many private institutions (not just MIT...most schools have AA policies) or possibly petition to them. There are MANY more constructive ways to help yourselves than asking questions that you know have no concrete answers.

I don't see how fighting AA is hiding behind it?

I agree that he isn't the savior, I am. XD

@ caramba I don't think that he was comparing himself to Dr. MLK, but rather showing that people that do good things can be seen as annoying by others.

@ streetlight You say that you've read JLP's post yet you continue to attack AAB. I AIM him all the time, and the attacks seem to fuel him like pebbles implied. If you hit a nerve, you will get a response and that means you are being effective. I believe that what we are doing, protesting AA in our way is right. Any way of going against it is right. Finally, Matt did give us concrete answers, after much badgering:

"Q1. Statistically speaking, do Asian male applicants to MIT have a lower admission rate than the overall admission rate?

A1. Over the past few years, the answer to this question has been YES.

Q2. Is there prejudice in the MIT Admissions Office against Asian male applicants?

A2. NO, there is not."

Were compiling a few questions for when he will call, post here if you want something asked, or if you want to join our Anti-AA/Asian Rights clique, PM me. :D

And on the soldier note:

"We still have soldiers that's on the front line
That's willing to die for us as soon as we give the orders"
-- Eminem

die for the cause. holla.

Totally agree with streetlight. We don't live in an utopia. Discrimination against asian is the least of my worries right now, and I'm an immigrant for christ's sake. There are other prejudices out there that are more significant like homophobia and sexism.

Well then, you are happily living in your own world, which I dare say is more of a utopia than the one everyone else is living in. Doesn't RSI practically guarantee you admission to MIT anyway? I wish I lived in your fantasy land.

On the topic of sexism, I dare claim that MIT is sexist, giving females 2.5 times the acceptance rate that males have. Seems like we are on the same page, fighting the same battle!

staticsoliloquy: how is one form of discrimination any better or worse than another?!

theleet says, "On the topic of sexism, I dare claim that MIT is sexist, giving females 2.5 times the acceptance rate that males have. Seems like we are on the same page, fighting the same battle!"

I wouldn't call MIT (or any other institution that uses AA, for that matter) racist or sexist. I think people who practice AA do so with the best intentions, but in my opinion AA is a horrible solution to the problem.

So I wouldn't call MIT sexist, but I think the double acceptance rate for females is crap. Yes I'm female, and no I don't hate myself. =)

-Laura

crap as in BS?

or crap as in wrong?

I don't blame anyone for getting in. It is MIT's policy, not ours.
