To any student that has applied to NYU/Tisch (CAP21) in the past few years:

You guys are making me more excited than ever that my D chose NYU! The ability to transfer to a different studio after sophomore year is a cool one from a parental point of view, though my D cannot imagine now that she would ever want to do anything but MT! Still, it's nice to know she can if she feels differently about it when the time comes. (She says she won't. :))

NMR, I AGREE!!! Music to a parents ears! NYU certainly is one of the more versatile, well rounded schools. It seems like there are a lot of options in almost every aspect of the school.

Sooziet, thanks for the insight. When my D gets home from school, I will have her read this thread, and we may take you up on your offer to have her talk to your D's friend.
I have had communications with a relative-of-sorts who teaches drama at another university, and he is saying the same thing - that here she has the opportunity to become a complete, well rounded actress.

Momster.....I'd be happy to try to help. It is not my daughter's friend. It is my client/student. They do not know one another but will real well by the time this summer is over. :D

NMR....I totally get what your D is saying and thinking. Things evolve once they are IN school. You'll see. :D

bettyboop, as chrisnoo and I are both saying, what happened with NOCCA Junior whom I personally do not know, is an EXCEPTION. I know of another exception but these are truly considered just that and are not the norm. I don't know under what circumstances exceptions are made, however. Go into it knowing that the policy is primary studio for at least two years and then you can choose to stay in it or audition for an advanced studio. You also could stay three years in primary studio and audition for the fourth year in another studio.

Yes, NJ was an exception. My D is really into MT. But it's good to know that she has options down the line. The overall diversity of the school is great. She is accustomed to a very diverse environment which is part of her hesitation with the "other" school.

sfkef2010,
You said "CAP21 students go to auditions all the time". Are you talking about professional jobs or shows at NYU? I was told that auditioning for Broadway while you are a student is not looked upon favorably

It is impossible to go to auditions for Broadway often with the schedule these kids have with school all day (most auditions are on weekdays). They are not allowed to miss a studio class more then twice per semester at CAP. So, hardly any audition outside of school on a regular basis (not counting summer stock auditions). A couple might but again, could not with regularity. My D does not as she wants to stay in school all four years. A couple friends have attended auditions and been cast and have taken leaves. I could cite several examples (although truly the majority do not do this). One recent example is a friend/classmate from CAP21 who is also in my D's a capella group who took this year off as he was cast in the LA cast of History Boys. He is back from that job but not in school for the remainder of the year (though is back in her a capella group) and he was just cast (but is not missing classes for auditions!) as the swing in the upcoming Glory Days for Broadway. So, some kids do this but they have not gone to LOTS of auditions as that is impossible to do. But if they are cast, they must take a leave (or leave all together) from Tisch. Many have taken a leave and have returned to finish out school. My child doesn't want to even audition as she doesn't want such a situation to arise since she is there to go to school now and train and will leave auditioning for after graduation. She is more in the majority I believe. I must admit that on several occasions her peers have pushed her to audition for Spring Awakening and cannot understand why she won't while in school. So, obviously not all feel the same. But the fact remains that you can't audition much while in school, and if that is your true aim, it might make sense to not be in school at this time. Her aim currently is to train. I would not pick NYU with the goal of "I'll be in NYC and I can audition all the time!"

All -
I thought I would add my 2 cents about my D's progress at NYU.

She will finish her second year at CAP - and auditioned and was accepted at the Classical Studio for next year, her Junior year.

She will most likely go back to CAP for the Senior Showcase semester (at least - that is her plan now)...but who knows....RADA may beckon her as well.

janenw

Janew....great to hear from you and to get that update which sounds exciting! Things evolve, don't they? I had never thought my D would not do all 3 1/2 years at CAP and now she switched into ETW after 2 1/2 years in CAP21. At the time she thought she might do the showcase semester at CAP in her fourth year but she no longer plans to do so. She is doing 3 semesters of ETW, plans to write and perform her own musical next year at ETW and try for the Tisch MT Industry Night. Keep us updated how things transpire for your D. My D has had some friends go to Classical studio after two years in CAP as well. Supposed to be really good.

momofkp, it's true that the studios don't want you to miss class. If, however, your schedule permits, you can go on other days of the week and weekends. Both professional shows and NYU shows. I'm in CAP and subscribe to backstage magazine, where the auditions are listed. Spring semester 2007, I went to several auditions and callbacks, especially for summer stock companies. You're not going to be able to go to 2 auditions per week, but 1 or 2 a month will fit into your schedule.
My goals are certainly to train, but I chose NYU for the location...It would be a shame to not take advantage of the opportunities, including the auditions!! It's excellent practice! Even if nothing comes of it, I look at auditions as free dance class!

sfkef, great thinking! If it works for you go for it!

If a cap student didn't transfer to an advanced studio before the 31/2 years were up, what are the options studio-wise for the remaining semester?

Often the 8th semester is an academic semester. Or there are some studios, I THINK, that may have a one semester you can do in them (I'd have to check....such as Stonestreet Studio). The CAP21 showcase semester can be done in either the 7th or 8th semester. Also, conceivably, in your 8th semester, you could audition for the Tisch wide Industry night showcase and be working on that too.

ETW can be a one semester experience. there's also a Viewpoints studio in the spring sometimes. and yes, Stonestreet can also be one semester. :) You could also do the spring semester of Playwrights, but you have to audition in the fall. also study abroad is a one semester thing, although you probably wouldn't want to do that your last semester. also there are lots of electives, or an internship.
