to anyone with experience: do colleges only match documents by SSN?

If we accidentally write down the wrong social security number, will colleges still check by Name, school, birthday? Sorry if this is a dumb question, but if anyone who has worked in an admissions office could help me out, i'd appreciate it.

You could contact the admission's offices via telephone or email and ask your question directly. State that you just now realized that you wrote the wrong social security number on your application and you would like to correct the mistake. They'll probably ask for the correct social security number and they will make the correction for you.

If your name is not common then it should be just the name. If there is more than one Joe Smith then they must use something to differentiate. If you wrote the wrong SS, you should send them the correct number.

i don't actually know if i wrote the wrong SSN. For my teacher, so far pretty much none of my colleges have received his rec even though it was sent out a long time ago. perhaps it is because of a typo on information (i wrote separate teacher forms so i wrote my SSN many times, but i think my teacher may have just picked one copy and photo copied it). I really don't know if anything went wrong or maybe its just a series of bad coincidences.

My daughter included a self-stamped postcard inside each envelope that she gave her teacher for the letter of recommendation. When her colleges receive the letter, they dated and mailed back. And that is how she knew it got there ok. I believe it took a while for the system to update. The colleges will send you something to let you know if it missing anything. For example, one college in the NE, did not updated the system until late Feb. Please check with you teachers to confirm when they did send out the letters.

Thanks Columbia_student! I checked with my teachers already so I suppose I'll just wait until Mid-February and see if any colleges come to me asking about missing materials.
