To apply undecided or not? That is the question (that is killing me)

I'm not quite sure what I want to do when I'm older, but I do know that I don't want to do anything math or science related. With that said, if I apply undecided I'm going to have trouble doing a lot of supplements that ask me what attracts me to the specific major and program that im applying to (Michigan's supplement). I've been speculative abuot applying undecided as it is and this made me question it more. Should I just apply everywhere with Political Science (I may be interested in this but I'm not sure)????? How easy is it to switch my major if I find that I don't like polsci?

bump bump bumpity bump :)

It depends upon what what college you’re referring to and what school within the college you decide to switch your major into. For example, switching into the Ross school of business at Michigan may not be a sure thing.

id say do polsci

@jshain, I’d be applying to LSA political science. I think I’d take an econ course to see if I’m interested and if I really like it, i’d try to transfer into Ross but I’m just worrying about here and now, not sophomore year of college. So I’m applying LSA undecided or political science, would political science be better so I can write the essay and maybe see what I like by taking polisci courses?

If you do apply undecided, you can always put in the supplement how you’re torn between a few, and then just explain what attracts you to those subjects or that college/school (within Michigan) in particular to the other programs the school offers. (I’m not encouraging one way or another since I don’t know either you or that school, just saying that there’s a way.)

I think I would declare Political Science. You can switch at a later date if that doesn’t work out for you but, bear in mind, Ross may not be an option for you. Since my son is applying to Lurie school of Engineering there, I was not concerned with Ross, but I think it is a tough school to get into at a later date.

Hi, can I apply to Ross as a first year applicant? Because it doesn’t show as an option in the “U-M college or school to which you are applying” list. It only appeared in the preferred admission section. May I ask, what exactly is the preferred admission and should I apply for it if I want to be admitted into Ross as a first-year applicant?

^Go to the UMich “Admissions” website for more details but they accept a limited number of Preferred Admission applicants directly out of high school.

I’d go with political science, especially if you’re fairly sure that you’ll eventually be majoring in anything of the liberal arts variety. It’ll be easier to change your mind that way.

A college coach I had a brief conversation with over the summer said that “undecided” has a tendency of making admissions officers halt because it shows a student who really lacks direction (which makes them question what it is you even want from their school).
